Q32(b) · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedQuadratic Equations
A motor boat whose speed is 18 km/h in still water takes 1 hour more to go 24 km upstream than to return downstream to the same spot. Find the speed of the stream.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The stream slows the boat going upstream and speeds it up going downstream.
Hint 2
Upstream time − downstream time = 1 hour. Clear the fractions to get a quadratic.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Let the speed of the stream be km/h.
Upstream speed km/h. Downstream speed km/h.
- 1 mark
Using time = distance ÷ speed:
Time upstream h. Time downstream h.
- 1 mark
The upstream journey takes 1 hour more:
- 1 mark
, so or .
- 1 mark
A speed cannot be negative, so we reject .
The speed of the stream is 6 km/h.
Answer: Speed of the stream = 6 km/h
Where the marks are
- Writes the upstream and downstream speeds as 18 − x and 18 + x (1 mark)
- Writes both times as distance ÷ speed (1 mark)
- Forms the equation 24/(18−x) − 24/(18+x) = 1 (1 mark)
- Reduces it to x² + 48x − 324 = 0 and solves to get x = 6 or −54 (1 mark)
- Rejects the negative value and states 6 km/h (1 mark)
