Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Ask how long each event lasts and how long its effect lasts.

Hint 2

Use one image from each poem: the ball in the water, the snow from the hemlock tree.

Hint 3

Link them: a small moment, a big inner change.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Both poems show that deep learning can come in an instant. The ball falling into the water teaches the boy the permanence of loss at once. Snow falling on the speaker changes their mood immediately.

    2 marks
  2. The impact lasts. Berryman suggests the boy will carry the lesson of loss and responsibility through life. In Frost, the snow's dust redeems the day and changes how the speaker sees it.

    2 marks
  3. The learning is felt, not reasoned. The boy feels loss deeply, and the speaker experiences nature's beauty directly. Expression and accuracy.
