  2. (ii) Ebright's mother was his only companion. She took him on trips, bought him a microscope and other equipment, and gave him problems to solve. She gave him the book 'The Travels of Monarch X' and wrote to Dr. Urquhart, who guided him. Her encouragement made him a scientist.

  3. (iii) The Martian leader Tiglath Pileser found the old book 'Mother Goose' and misread its rhymes. He thought earthlings were more advanced, with sharper ears, and could grow silver and explosives. Scared, he called his crew back, so Earth was saved by a nursery-rhyme book.
