Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) The young seagull's parents scolded him and made him jealous by praising his siblings, who had already flown. They threatened to leave him to starve on the ledge. Finally his mother planned a way: she flew up with a piece of fish, tempting him to fly to her.

  2. (b) Pranjol was born and brought up in Assam, so tea gardens were nothing new to him. He had seen many of them since childhood. Rajvir, from the city, had never seen one, so he was excited and Pranjol was not.

    3 marks
  3. (c) Valli had no money, and she refused the conductor's offer of a free cold drink. This shows her self-respect and pride. She was also sensible enough not to accept favours from, or go with, a stranger.

    3 marks
  4. (d) Inside a cage the tiger's movement is restricted. It cannot hunt its prey and becomes an object of display. It is deprived of its natural habitat and freedom and cannot prance in the wild.

    3 marks
  5. (e) In 'For Anne Gregory' the poet shows that physical beauty is temporary and superficial. Young men love Anne for her yellow hair, which can be dyed or can change. So external looks are unimportant; only inner worth earns true love, as God's love does.
