Vector (Cross) Product: Determinant Method, Areas and Parallel Vectors
Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked
The vector (cross) product a × b is a vector of magnitude |a||b|sin θ, perpendicular to both a and b by the right-hand rule. It is computed as a determinant. Its magnitude is the area of the parallelogram on a and b, and it is zero exactly when a and b are parallel.
a × b stands perpendicular to the plane of a and b, and its length |a||b| sin θ equals the parallelogram's area.

Understand Vector (Cross) Product of Vectors
Definition. For vectors and with angle between them,
where is the unit vector perpendicular to both and , chosen by the right-hand rule: curl the fingers of the right hand from towards , and the thumb points along . Unlike the dot product, the result is a vector.
Unit vectors. , , (in cyclic order), while reversing the order gives the negative: . And .
Determinant form. For and :
Watch the minus sign on the term; it is where most slips happen.
Properties.

- Unit vector perpendicular to both and : (two answers, opposite directions).
- Collinear points: , , are collinear if .
Physics link. Torque is , and the force on a moving charge in a magnetic field is , so the cross product reappears throughout Class 12 Physics. (Proving general geometrical theorems with vectors is excluded from the 2027 syllabus; the cross product is used here for calculation.)

How to solve Vector (Cross) Product of Vectors questions
Most cross-product questions ask for the product itself, a perpendicular unit vector, an area or a parallel/collinear test.
- 1Write both vectors in component form; for points, form side vectors as (terminal − initial).
- 2Set up the determinant with in the top row.
- 3Expand along the top row, remembering the minus sign on the term; write each minor before simplifying.
- 4Check your answer: its dot product with each original vector must be 0.
- 5For an area, find the magnitude; halve it for a triangle (or for a parallelogram given by diagonals).
- 6For a perpendicular unit vector, divide by the magnitude and give both signs.
- 7For parallel or collinear tests, show the cross product is the zero vector.

Memory hook: Turning effect = position × force, pointing along the axis of turning.
Tricks to remember Vector (Cross) Product of Vectors
Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.
i-j-k clockwise
Write i, j, k round a circle: going forwards gives +, backwards gives −.
Use it when: Cross products of unit vectors.
Minus in the middle
In the determinant expansion, the ĵ term always carries a minus sign.
Use it when: Avoiding the commonest sign error.
Zero cross means parallel
Dot zero: perpendicular. Cross zero: parallel.
Use it when: Parallel and collinear tests.
Check by dotting
a × b must be perpendicular to a and to b: both dot products must be 0.
Use it when: Catching arithmetic slips.

Where students lose marks in Vector (Cross) Product of Vectors
The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Sign error on the ĵ term
The middle term of the determinant expansion carries a minus sign.
Wrong working
.
Right working
.
Do this: Write the full expansion pattern before substituting numbers.
Usually costs: 1 mark, and every later part that uses the vector.
Mistake: Not using the distributive law
In ISC 2024 candidates failed to rewrite a × b = a × c as a × (b − c) = 0.
Do this: Move everything to one side and factor out the common vector.
Usually costs: 1 to 2 marks.
Mistake: Forgetting the ½ for a triangle
The cross product magnitude gives the parallelogram area.
Do this: Triangle = ½|AB × AC|; parallelogram from diagonals = ½|d₁ × d₂| too.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Giving only one unit vector
There are two unit vectors perpendicular to a plane, in opposite directions.
Do this: Write ± before the answer.
Usually costs: ½ to 1 mark.
Exam tips
- Show the determinant set-up; it earns the method mark even if a minor goes wrong.
- Check your cross product by dotting it with one of the original vectors.
- Keep magnitudes as surds () unless asked for decimals.
- For collinearity, a zero cross product (or one vector a scalar multiple of the other) is enough; state the conclusion.
- Remember the 2027 syllabus excludes proofs of geometrical theorems by vectors; expect calculation and short property proofs instead.

Vector (Cross) Product of Vectors: frequently asked questions
How is the cross product different from the dot product?
The dot product gives a number, |a||b|cos θ; the cross product gives a vector of size |a||b|sin θ perpendicular to both. The dot product vanishes for perpendicular vectors, the cross product for parallel ones.
How do I find the direction of a × b?
Use the right-hand rule: curl the fingers from a towards b through the smaller angle; the thumb points along a × b. In component form, the determinant gives the direction automatically.
Why are there two unit vectors perpendicular to two given vectors?
Both a × b and b × a are perpendicular to a and b, and they point in opposite directions. So the answer is ±(a × b)/|a × b|.
How do I find the area of a triangle with given vertices?
Form two side vectors from one vertex, such as AB and AC, find their cross product, and take half its magnitude.
Is the vector product in the ISC 2027 syllabus?
Yes. The CISCE 2027 syllabus includes the cross product, its geometrical significance and properties, including areas of triangles and parallelograms and collinear vectors, while excluding proofs of geometrical theorems by vectors.
