India's Population: Size, World Share and Rank (ISC Class 12 Geography)

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Census 2011 counted 1,210.8 million (about 121 crore) people in India, about 17.5 per cent of the world's population on about 2.4 per cent of its land. India's density was 382 persons per sq km. It ranked second after China in 2011 and, according to United Nations estimates, became the most populous country in 2023.

Understand India's Population: Census 2011 Figures, World Share and Rank

1. Size (Census 2011). The census counted 1,210.8 million people (about 121 crore), of whom about 623 million were males and about 588 million females. About 182 million were added in 2001-2011. The decadal growth rate was 17.7 per cent, down from 21.5 per cent in 1991-2001. Density was 382 persons per sq km (325 in 2001). Uttar Pradesh was the most populous state with about 200 million (16.5 per cent of India) and Sikkim the least populous with about 6 lakh.

2. Share of world population and area. India covers about 3.287 million sq km, about 2.4 per cent of the world's land, but holds about 17.5 per cent of the world's people, roughly one in six. The population share is about seven times the area share, so average density is far above the world's, and the pressure falls on land, water, forests and urban services. The high share is explained by fertile alluvial plains, a monsoon climate allowing two or three crops, a long history of settled agriculture and high birth rates in the twentieth century as death rates fell.

3. Rank. In 2011 India was second to China (about 1,340 million). UN estimates show that India overtook China in 2023. Since no census has been held after 2011, present figures are estimates and projections. In an answer, say which year you mean: 'according to Census 2011, second; now, estimated first'.

4. What a census is. A census is an official, complete count of the population at a fixed date. In India it is held every ten years by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Census Act, 1948. The first synchronous census was in 1881, the first after Independence in 1951, and Census 2011 was the 15th since 1872. Census 2021 was postponed, so Census 2011 remains the latest census used for ISC answers.

5. Implications. Challenges: shrinking land per person and fragmented holdings; high demand for food and water with groundwater over-use in the north-west; millions joining the workforce each year with underemployment in agriculture; shortages of housing, schools, hospitals and growth of slums; and pollution, deforestation and loss of biodiversity. Opportunities: a large working-age population (the demographic dividend) if educated, healthy and employed; a huge domestic market; and skilled human resources. The balance depends on planned development.

India's Population: Census 2011 Figures, World Share and Rank in real life

The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.

A classroom of six

Suppose a teacher says that in every group of six people drawn from all over the world, one is Indian, and that the group would occupy only a small fraction of the world's land compared with their number.

Use the 2011 shares to check the teacher's remark and state the ratio of population share to area share.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Population share is about 17.5 per cent, roughly one in six.
  2. Area share is about 2.4 per cent.
  3. Ratio = 17.5 / 2.4 which is about 7.3.

Answer: The remark is correct; the population share is about 7 times the area share.

Memory hook: One in six people, one in forty land.

Planning school seats

Suppose a district officer in a state with density far above the national figure plans new schools and asks why services are under pressure.

Name two pressures that high density puts on services, using the chapter's implications.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Shortage of housing, schools and hospitals.
  2. Growth of slums and pressure on land and water.

Answer: Shortages of housing, schools and hospitals, and slum growth and pressure on land and water.

Memory hook: More people per square kilometre, fewer services per person.

Where students lose marks in India's Population: Census 2011 Figures, World Share and Rank

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Quoting the rank without the year

India is second in 2011 but now estimated first.

Do this: Always write the year: second (2011); first by UN estimates (2023).

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Mixing census years in one answer

Density or growth is quoted from different censuses.

    Wrong working

Density 382 and growth 21.5 per cent for the same decade

    Right working

    2001-2011: growth 17.7 per cent, density 382 in 2011

Do this: Keep all figures from Census 2011 unless the question asks for a comparison.

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Dropping units in density

The answer is a bare number.

Do this: Write persons per sq km.

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Giving only challenges

    The question says implications.

Do this: Add the demographic dividend and the market as opportunities.

Usually costs: 1 to 2 marks.

    Subtract the two rates.

    Answer

    (a) 3.8, since 21.5 - 17.7 = 3.8.

  2. Q2 · 2 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Invented figures: a country has 120 million people on an area of 60,000 sq km. Compute its density and compare it with India's 382.

    Hint

    Convert to the same unit.

    Answer

    Density = 120,000,000 / 60,000 = 2,000 persons per sq km, far above India's 382.

  3. Q3 · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Explain why the gap between India's population share and area share creates pressure on resources.

    Hint

    Seven times; land, water, services.

    Answer

The population share (17.5 per cent) is about seven times the area share (2.4 per cent), so density is high and each person has less land and water, while housing, schools and hospitals are stretched.

  4. Q4 · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level

State any four challenges and two opportunities of India's large population.

    Hint

Land, food, jobs, services; workforce, market.

    Answer

Challenges: shrinking per-capita land, high demand for food and water, employment pressure, shortage of housing and health services. Opportunities: a large working-age population and a huge domestic market.

  5. Q5 · 4 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency

A news item says, 'India is now the most populous country, but Census 2011 shows it second.' (a) Explain how both statements can be true. (b) Explain why the first cannot be a census figure.

    Hint

    Different years and sources.

    Answer

    (a) Census 2011 put India second after China; UN estimates show India overtook China in 2023. (b) No census has been held after 2011, so the present figure is an estimate or projection, not a count.
