Chota Nagpur, Visakhapatnam-Guntur and Gurgaon-Delhi-Meerut Industrial Regions (ISC Class 12 Geography)

Updated 18 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Chota Nagpur is India's heavy-industry region on coal, iron ore, DVC power and public sector steel plants, with Bokaro as a Soviet-aided integrated plant. Visakhapatnam-Guntur combines a natural deep port, Krishna-Godavari oil and gas, imported ore and agro-raw materials. Gurgaon-Delhi-Meerut has mainly light, consumer and high-technology industries because of its market, skills and transport but no coal or iron ore.

Understand Chota Nagpur, Visakhapatnam-Guntur and Gurgaon-Delhi-Meerut Industrial Regions

1. Chota Nagpur. *Extent*: Jharkhand, northern Odisha and western West Bengal and adjoining Chhattisgarh: Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ranchi, Rourkela, Durgapur, Asansol-Burnpur, Sindri. *Industries*: heavy industry: iron and steel (Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur, Burnpur), heavy engineering (HEC Ranchi), locomotives (Chittaranjan), fertilisers (Sindri), cement, aluminium, coal-based power.

*Factors*: (1) coal (Jharia, Bokaro, Raniganj, Giridih); iron ore (Singhbhum, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj); manganese, limestone and dolomite nearby. (2) Power: thermal plants and the Damodar Valley Corporation, India's first multipurpose river valley project, giving hydel and thermal power, water and flood control. (3) Water from the Damodar, Subarnarekha and tributaries. (4) Cheap labour. (5) Market and port at Kolkata; rail links. (6) Government investment in public sector steel plants (Rourkela with Germany, Bokaro with the Soviet Union, Durgapur with Britain).

*Bokaro*: an integrated steel plant built with Soviet collaboration near the confluence of the Bokaro and Damodar rivers in Bokaro district (formerly part of Hazaribagh), Jharkhand. Coal comes from Jharia and Bokaro, power from the DVC, iron ore from Odisha and Jharkhand. An integrated plant carries out all stages from smelting to finished steel at one site, whereas a mini plant is small and usually melts scrap or sponge iron (a general explanation, not from the chapter page).

2. Visakhapatnam-Guntur. *Extent*: from Visakhapatnam through Kakinada, Rajahmundry and Vijayawada to Guntur along the Andhra coast. *Industries*: integrated steel (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant), shipbuilding (Hindustan Shipyard), oil refining (HPCL Visakhapatnam), petrochemicals and fertilisers (Kakinada), sugar, cement, textiles, food processing, tobacco processing (Guntur). *Factors*: Visakhapatnam's natural deep port; oil and natural gas of the Krishna-Godavari basin; iron ore from Bailadila by rail; coal from Talcher and Singareni; fertile irrigated Godavari-Krishna deltas supplying agro-raw materials; government investment.

3. Gurgaon-Delhi-Meerut. *Extent*: Delhi with Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut, extending to Manesar and Sonipat. *Industries*: light, consumer and high-technology: automobiles and parts (Gurugram, Manesar), electronics and mobile phones (Noida), light engineering, software and business services, textiles and garments, agro-processing (sugar at Meerut and Modinagar), footwear, printing. *Factors*: proximity to the national capital and its huge market; government offices and policy influence; electricity from the northern grid (Bhakra and thermal plants) instead of local coal; skilled labour and institutions; excellent road, rail and air links; the farming hinterland of Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh; planned industrial townships and private investment.

4. Heavy versus consumer industry. Heavy industries cluster where raw materials and power are (Chota Nagpur, Visakhapatnam); consumer and high-technology industries cluster near large markets, skilled labour and good communication (Delhi region, Bengaluru, Mumbai-Pune).

5. A raw-material sum (imaginary). A steel plant uses 2.5 tonnes of coal and 1.6 tonnes of iron ore to make 1 tonne of steel. For 8 lakh tonnes of steel it needs 8 x 2.5 = 20 lakh tonnes of coal and 8 x 1.6 = 12.8 lakh tonnes of iron ore. Coal and ore total 32.8 lakh tonnes, far heavier than the steel itself, so the plant sits near the coalfields. (Ratios invented.)

Practice questions on Chota Nagpur, Visakhapatnam-Guntur and Gurgaon-Delhi-Meerut Industrial Regions

Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.

  1. Q1 · 1 mark · Very short answerBoard level

Which public sector steel plants of the Chota Nagpur region were set up with foreign help, and with which country was each built?

    Hint

    Germany, Soviet Union, Britain.

    Answer

Rourkela with Germany, Bokaro with the Soviet Union and Durgapur with Britain (Bhilai, outside the region, with the Soviet Union).

  2. Q2 · 1 mark · Very short answerBoard level

Name two industries of the Visakhapatnam-Guntur region.

    Hint

    Steel and ships.

    Answer

Steel, shipbuilding, oil refining, petrochemicals or fertilisers (any two).

  3. Q3 · 2 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Why is Chota Nagpur called the region of heavy, raw-material-oriented industry?

    Hint

    Coal and ore.

    Answer

Its coal, iron ore, manganese and limestone are close together, so heavy industries such as steel, heavy engineering and locomotives locate there to save transport costs.

  4. Q4 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

A plant makes 6 lakh tonnes of steel using 1.5 tonnes of limestone and dolomite per tonne of steel, and 2.4 tonnes of coal per tonne. Calculate the tonnage of each input and the total.

    Hint

    Multiply each ratio.

    Answer

    Limestone and dolomite = 6 x 1.5 = 9 lakh tonnes. Coal = 6 x 2.4 = 14.4 lakh tonnes. Total = 23.4 lakh tonnes.

  5. Q5 · 4 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency

A company wants to start a heavy engineering unit in the Delhi region. Evaluate the idea using the factors of industries in the region.

    Hint

    Raw materials far away.

    Answer

The region has no coal or iron ore, so heavy industry must bring bulky raw materials from far away, raising costs. Its strengths are market, skills and transport, which suit light, consumer and high-technology industries. A heavy engineering unit is better placed in Chota Nagpur, unless the products are light or market-oriented.
