Exam note: English Paper 1 (Language) of ISC English (801), also Paper 1 of the new alternative Modern English (891), with the same syllabus: one 3-hour theory paper of 80 marks (plus 15 minutes reading time) with four compulsory questions: composition, directed writing and proposal, grammar, and comprehension with a summary. Project Work in listening, speaking and writing carries 20 marks.

Paper I: Theory

  1. Composition

    One topic from a choice of six; 400-450 words.

  2. Directed Writing

    250-300 words: feature article, book review, blogs, newspaper report or statement of purpose.

  3. Proposal Writing

  4. Grammar, Structure and Usage

  5. Comprehension

    Passage of about 700 words; the summary must be written in grid form.
