Importance of Management (ISC Class 12 Commerce)

Updated 18 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Management is important because it achieves group goals, increases efficiency by reducing cost and waste, creates a dynamic organisation that adapts to change, uses resources optimally, helps employees achieve personal objectives and contributes to the development of society. It also gives stability and survival, coordination and teamwork, and encourages innovation and growth.

Notice that one central function, management, leads to nine separate benefits; link each exam clue (cost, pay, jobs) to its matching benefit.

Understand Importance of Management

1. Achieving group goals. Management directs the efforts of individuals towards common organisational goals, harmonising personal and group aims.

2. Increasing efficiency. Through better planning, organising, directing and control, it reduces costs and waste and raises productivity.

3. Creating a dynamic organisation. It helps the firm adapt to change in technology, tastes and competition, and helps employees accept change.

4. Optimum use of resources. Men, materials, money and machines are combined in the best way.

5. Achieving personal objectives. Through motivation and leadership, managers help employees achieve their own goals (pay, recognition, growth) while contributing to the organisation.

6. Development of society. Well-managed firms provide quality goods, employment and better technology, and contribute to economic growth and welfare.

7. Stability and survival. Management steers the firm through uncertainty.

8. Coordination and teamwork. It integrates departments so that they work together.

9. Innovation and growth. It encourages new products and methods.

10. Linking each point to a clue. Reduced wastage or lower cost points to efficiency. Adjusting to new technology points to a dynamic organisation. Employees' pay and recognition point to personal objectives. Jobs, quality goods and technology point to society. All departments pulling together point to group goals and coordination.

11. A numerical view of efficiency (imaginary). A firm used 5,000 kg of material to make 4,000 units. After better planning it uses 4,200 kg for the same 4,000 units. Material saved = 800 kg, which is 800 / 5,000 x 100 = 16%. At Rs 90 per kg the saving is 800 x 90 = Rs 72,000.

Where students lose marks in Importance of Management

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: One-word points

    Points need reasons.

    Right working

Efficiency, because better planning and control cut cost and waste.

Do this: Add a reason with each point.

    Usually costs: 1-2 marks.

  • Mistake: Wrong base in percentage saving

Percentage saving is calculated on the original amount.

    Wrong working

    800 / 4,200 x 100.

    Right working

    800 / 5,000 x 100 = 16%.

Do this: Divide by the original.

    Hint

  4. Q4 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

A firm used 6,000 kg of raw material for 5,000 units and now needs 5,100 kg for the same units at Rs 70 per kg. Find the percentage saving and the total saving, and link to management.

    Hint

    Savings in kg first.

    Answer

    Saving = 6,000 - 5,100 = 900 kg; 900 / 6,000 x 100 = 15%. Money saved = 900 x 70 = Rs 63,000. This shows management increasing efficiency by reducing waste.

  5. Q5 · 4 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency

Suppose a critic claims, 'Management is useful only when a firm is large.' Evaluate using at least three points on the importance of management.
