Nationalism in the Republics and the Impact of the Collapse (ISC Class 11 Political Science)

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Nationalism in the fifteen republics, helped by glasnost and Eastern Europe's freedom, led the Baltic states and Russia under Yeltsin to assert independence; after the failed August 1991 coup, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus created the CIS on 8 December 1991 and Gorbachev resigned on 25 December. The impact was the end of the Cold War, a unipolar world, fifteen new states and a painful transition.

Follow the dates: republics asserted themselves, the coup failed, the CIS replaced the USSR, and the Cold War ended.

Understand Nationalism in the Republics and the Impact of the Collapse

Nationalism. The USSR was a union of fifteen republics; Russians dominated the party and state and others resented Russification and central control. (1) Baltic republics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), independent between the wars and annexed in 1940, led the drive; Lithuania declared independence in March 1990. (2) Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Moldova and others demanded sovereignty; ethnic conflict broke out, such as Armenia-Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh from 1988. (3) Glasnost let national movements organise and Eastern Europe's fall encouraged them. (4) Russia under Yeltsin, elected its President in June 1991, declared sovereignty and challenged Gorbachev. (5) Central Asian republics were less eager but could not stay in a union the largest republics were leaving. (6) After the August 1991 coup most republics declared independence. (7) On 8 December 1991 the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus (Belovezha agreement) declared the USSR no longer existed and created the Commonwealth of Independent States; Gorbachev resigned on 25 December 1991.

End of the Cold War. The Cold War rivalry ended; the Warsaw Pact and Comecon dissolved in 1991; a unipolar world dominated by the USA; START signed in 1991; capitalism and liberal democracy spread with IMF and World Bank guidance.

New states. Fifteen independent states: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova; Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania; Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan; Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan. Russia was accepted as the successor state and took the permanent UN Security Council seat. Most (except the Baltic states) joined the CIS. The transition was painful: shock therapy (rapid privatisation and market reforms) caused economic collapse, inflation and loss of welfare. New conflicts arose (Chechnya); the Baltic states later joined the EU and NATO (2004).
