Temperate and Cold Regions: Mediterranean, Temperate Grasslands, Taiga and Tundra (ICSE Class 9 Geography)
Updated 17 October 2026 · Draft, not yet fact-checked
The Mediterranean region has hot dry summers and mild wet winters with citrus fruit and vines; temperate grasslands (prairies, steppes, pampas) are continental with wheat and cattle; taiga is a belt of coniferous forest with long cold winters; tundra lies in the far north with mosses and lichens and a frozen subsoil.
Understand Temperate and Cold Regions: Mediterranean, Temperate Grasslands, Taiga and Tundra
1. Mediterranean region (30 to 45 degrees N and S on western sides). Around the Mediterranean Sea, California, central Chile, the Cape in South Africa and south-western Australia. Climate: hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters (rain brought by westerlies). Vegetation: evergreen trees with thick, waxy leaves (cork oak, olive), scrub and grass; citrus fruits, grapes, olives, figs. Human life: fruit growing, wine making, tourism.
2. Temperate grasslands. Prairies (North America), steppes (Eurasia), pampas (Argentina), veld (South Africa), downs (Australia). Climate: continental, with warm summers, cold winters and moderate rain (25 to 75 cm). Vegetation: grass, few trees. Human life: large-scale wheat farming and cattle ranching.
3. Taiga (coniferous forest). Between about 50 and 70 degrees N in Canada, Scandinavia, Siberia. Climate: long, very cold winters and short, cool summers; low precipitation mostly snow. Vegetation: evergreen conifers (pine, fir, spruce) with needle leaves and conical shape to shed snow. Human life: lumbering, paper and pulp; fur trapping.
4. Tundra. North of the taiga, near the Arctic Circle. Climate: extremely cold, summers short and cool, a frozen subsoil (permafrost). Vegetation: mosses, lichens, dwarf shrubs. Animals: reindeer, polar bear, arctic fox. Human life: sparse; herding and hunting by local people.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
- In summer the sub-tropical high-pressure belt moves over the region.
- Winds are dry and rain does not fall.
Answer: Sub-tropical high pressure gives dry summers; westerlies give winter rain.
Example 3: Conifers · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level
Explain three adaptations of coniferous trees of the taiga to cold conditions. [3]
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Conical shape sheds snow.
- Needle leaves reduce water loss.
- Evergreen leaves allow photosynthesis in a short summer.
Answer: Conical shape, needles and evergreen leaves.
Example 4: Compare regions · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Compare the tundra and taiga on temperature, vegetation and economic use. [4]
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Tundra is colder than taiga.
- Tundra has mosses and lichens; taiga has conifers.
- Taiga has lumbering; tundra has limited herding and hunting.
- Tundra has permafrost.
Answer: Taiga: conifers and lumbering; tundra: lichens, permafrost, limited use.

Where students lose marks in Temperate and Cold Regions: Mediterranean, Temperate Grasslands, Taiga and Tundra
The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Placing taiga near the equator
Latitude error.
Do this: Taiga lies in the north.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Mixing steppes and pampas
Location error.
Do this: Steppes Eurasia; pampas Argentina.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Describing only climate
Other headings missed.
Do this: Cover climate, vegetation, animals, people.
Usually costs: 2 marks.
Exam tips
- Use the same five headings for every region.
- Add a locational example.
- Explain cause as well as description.
- Mention names of grasslands.
