Marking the World Map: Guide Lines, Oceans, Rivers, Mountains and Plateaus (ICSE Class 9 Geography)

Updated 17 October 2026 · Draft, not yet fact-checked

In map work, use the right symbol (a line for a river, a chain of inverted Vs for a mountain range, hatching for a plateau), place each feature correctly against the equator, the tropics and the polar circle, label neatly in capitals, and learn the source, direction and mouth of each river and the position of each range.

Understand Marking the World Map: Guide Lines, Oceans, Rivers, Mountains and Plateaus

1. Marking rules. A river is a line along its course with the name written along it; a mountain range is a chain of inverted Vs along its true direction; a plateau is hatched or dotted and labelled; seas, gulfs and oceans are named inside the water body; a strait is shown by a small arrow or two short lines across the narrow passage; natural regions are shaded with different patterns and a key. Use a sharp pencil, small neat capitals and light shading.

2. Latitudes and longitudes as guides. The Equator (0 degrees) passes through the Amazon mouth, the Congo basin, Lake Victoria, Sumatra and Borneo; the Tropic of Cancer (23½ degrees N) through Mexico, the Sahara, Saudi Arabia, India and southern China; the Tropic of Capricorn (23½ degrees S) through Brazil, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Madagascar and Australia; the Arctic Circle (66½ degrees N) through Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia and Siberia; the Prime Meridian (0 degrees) through London, France, Spain, Algeria and Ghana.

3. Water bodies. Oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic. Seas: Caribbean, North, Mediterranean, Black, Caspian, South China. Gulfs and bays: Gulf of Mexico, Hudson Bay, Gulf of Guinea, Persian Gulf, Bay of Bengal.

4. Rivers (examples). Mississippi (to the Gulf of Mexico), Amazon (Andes to the Atlantic), Nile (to the Mediterranean), Congo (Atlantic), Zambezi (Indian Ocean), Rhine (North Sea), Danube (Black Sea), Volga (Caspian Sea), Ganga (Bay of Bengal), Yangtze (East China Sea).

5. Mountains. Rockies, Andes, Appalachians, Alps, Pyrenees, Urals, Atlas, Drakensberg, Himalayas, Caucasus.

6. Plateaus. Canadian Shield, Tibetan Plateau, Brazilian Highlands, Patagonian Plateau, Mongolian Plateau.

Marking the World Map: Guide Lines, Oceans, Rivers, Mountains and Plateaus in real life

The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.

Planning a route on a map

Suppose a student plans a river cruise starting in the Alps and ending in the sea and picks the Rhine.

Where does it end and what lies on the way?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. It starts in the Swiss Alps.
  2. It flows north through Germany.
  3. It ends in the North Sea in the Netherlands.

Answer: Alps to the North Sea.

Memory hook: Alps north to the North Sea.

Tricks to remember Marking the World Map: Guide Lines, Oceans, Rivers, Mountains and Plateaus

Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.

  • V for mountain, line for river

Inverted Vs show a mountain; a line shows a river.

    Use it when: Symbols.

  • Equator crosses Amazon, Congo, Borneo

    Three guide points.

    Use it when: Equator.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Amazon: Atlantic.
  2. Nile: Mediterranean.
  3. Rhine: North Sea.
  4. Danube: Black Sea.

Answer: Atlantic, Mediterranean, North Sea, Black Sea.

Example 3: Use the guide line · 4 marks · Map workHarder board level

On an outline world map, which of the following are crossed by the Tropic of Cancer: Mexico, India, Brazil, the Sahara? Name two regions crossed by the Equator. [4]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Tropic of Cancer crosses Mexico, the Sahara and India; Brazil lies mostly south of it, so it is not on this line.
  2. The Equator crosses the Amazon basin (Brazil) and the Congo basin.

Answer: Mexico, India and the Sahara; the Equator crosses the Amazon basin (Brazil) and the Congo basin.

Example 4: Locate and label · 4 marks · Map workHarder board level

Describe how you would mark and label the Ural Mountains, the Caspian Sea and the Strait through which the Black Sea joins the Mediterranean. [4]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Urals: inverted Vs from the Arctic southward in Russia, between Europe and Asia.
  2. Caspian Sea: label inside the inland sea east of the Caucasus.
  3. Turkish straits: arrow or short lines across the narrow passage near Istanbul.
  4. Use neat capital letters.

Answer: Draw north-south inverted Vs for the Urals, name the Caspian Sea inside, and mark the Turkish straits with a small arrow.

Example 5: Case: the examiner's map · 6 marks · Case-basedHOTS / competency

Case. A student marks the Nile flowing south into the Mediterranean and the Andes on the east of South America. (i) Identify the two errors. [2] (ii) Correct them. [2] (iii) What simple check would have avoided each? [2]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. (i) Direction of the Nile and the position of the Andes.
  2. (ii) The Nile flows north into the Mediterranean; the Andes lie on the west coast of South America.
  3. (iii) Check river mouth against the sea, and keep the Andes along the western edge.

Answer: (i) Wrong direction and wrong side (ii) Nile flows north; Andes lie in the west (iii) Check the mouth and the coast.

Where students lose marks in Marking the World Map: Guide Lines, Oceans, Rivers, Mountains and Plateaus

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Drawing rivers flowing the wrong way

    Mouth and source confused.

Do this: Check the mouth sea first.

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Unlabelled features

    No name.

Do this: Write name in capitals next to each.

    Usually costs: 1 mark each.

  • Mistake: Using a thick pen

    Smudging.

Do this: Use a sharp pencil.

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

Exam tips

  • Practise outline maps with a pencil.
  • Learn each river with source, direction and mouth.
  • Use latitude lines as guides for placing features.
  • Add a key for regions.

Practice questions on Marking the World Map: Guide Lines, Oceans, Rivers, Mountains and Plateaus

  6. Q6 · 2 marks · Very short answerHarder board level

Why should the name of a river be written along its course while the name of a sea is written inside it? [2]

    Hint

    Marking rule.

    Answer

Writing along the course shows which river is meant; writing inside the sea names the water body clearly.

A student forgets to give a key while shading the equatorial and savanna regions. Explain the loss and the correction. [3]

    Hint

    Key.

    Answer

It flows eastward to the Indian Ocean; Victoria Falls lies on it.

  10. Q10 · 3 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency

Case. Examiners find that many students draw the Andes as a single line. Explain how a mountain range should be drawn and why a single line is wrong. [3]

    Hint

    Symbol.

    Answer

A mountain range is a chain of inverted Vs along its direction, since a single line is the symbol for a river, so it may be read as a river.
