ICSE Class 9 Notice Writing: The Six Elements of a Board-Style Notice
Updated 18 October 2026 · Draft, not yet fact-checked
A CISCE-style notice is short and written line by line with six elements: a creative title that does not repeat the question, the event, one date with the year, the time, the venue from smaller to larger place, and the participation details with whom to register and by when. The chapter page says there is no NOTICE heading, box or signature, and the notice carries 5 marks.
Understand The Six Elements of a Board-Style Notice (ICSE Class 9)
What the paper wants. Notice writing is Question 3(i) in the board layout and carries 5 marks (chapter page). The situation is a school event and the marking looks for six elements.
1. Creative title. A short catchy phrase, about three words or fewer, that does not repeat the words of the question. Wordplay, alliteration or a question works well, for example "Brain Wave" for a quiz contest. Avoid a long sentence and avoid a vague title that fits any event.
2. Event. Its full name on its own line, for instance "Inter House General Knowledge Quiz".
3. Date. One date with day, month and year. Choose a date about ten days to two weeks after the notice. For a series of classes give the date range.
4. Time. Start and end with a.m. and p.m. in lower case and with full stops, such as 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon.
5. Venue. Smaller place first, then the larger: "Room 12, Middle Wing, Sunrise School".
6. Participation. Who may take part, whom to give names to and the deadline. The deadline falls a few days after the notice and well before the event.
Layout. Put each element on its own line so it can be read at a glance. A single paragraph is penalised, and no NOTICE heading, box or signature is needed. The event details here must be reused exactly in the e-mail that follows in Question 3(ii).
