ICSE Class 9 Letter Writing: Formal and Informal Layout, Tone and Content

Updated 18 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Question 2 of ICSE English Paper 1 asks for one letter from a choice of two, a formal one and a friendly one. Write your address and the full date, the receiver's block for a formal letter, "Dear Sir," or "Dear [name]," as the salutation, a body that develops every point asked, and the matching subscription: "Yours faithfully," with your full name, or "Yours lovingly," with your first name.

Compare the two sheets: the formal letter adds the receiver's address, and each salutation pairs with its own closing and name.

Understand Formal and Informal Letter Layout, Tone and Content (ICSE Class 9)

What is assessed. The chapter page says the marking scheme rests on format, content and expression. Format covers address, date, salutation and subscription. Content means every point in the question is answered with detail. Expression means correct language in the right tone.

Informal (friendly) letter. Parts in order: your address, the date in full, the salutation ("Dear Didi,"), the body in paragraphs, a subscription such as "Yours lovingly," and your first name. It has no receiver's address and no subject line. The tone is warm and natural but still grammatical.

Formal letter. Parts in order: your address and the date, then the receiver's designation and address, the salutation ("Dear Sir," or "Dear Madam,"), the body, the subscription "Yours faithfully," and your full name. The chapter page notes that CISCE's published formal format has no subject line.

Matching pair. Formal "Dear Sir" goes with "Yours faithfully". Informal "Dear Neha" goes with "Yours affectionately". "Respected Sir" and "Yours sincerely" are listed as errors on the chapter page. "Yours" never takes an apostrophe.

Developing content. For each point the question names, write one paragraph with two concrete details (where, when, how many, what effect). In a complaint give the problem, its effect on people and two or more practical suggestions. In a request give the request, the benefit and the arrangements.

Tone. Formal letters avoid contractions, slang and exclamation marks. Friendly letters may use warm phrases but not text-message language.

Time. The board layout gives the letter 10 marks and about 20 minutes (chapter page). In Class IX your school sets the paper.
