Significance of Small Industries, Industrial Pollution, Deforestation and Remedies (ICSE Class 9 Economics)

Updated 18 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Cottage and small-scale industries suit India because they are labour-intensive, need little capital, spread development to villages and small towns, earn exports and give farm families supplementary income. Industrialisation also harms the environment through pollution (air, water, land, noise) and deforestation; two remedies in the syllabus are afforestation (planting trees to create forests) and waste management (collection, treatment, recycling and safe disposal of waste).

Follow the arrows: pollution is answered by waste management, and deforestation is answered by afforestation.

Understand Significance of Small Industries, Industrial Pollution, Deforestation and Remedies

Significance of cottage and small-scale industries for India.
1. Employment: they are labour-intensive and create many jobs per rupee invested, which suits India's large labour force.
2. Small capital: they need little capital, which suits a country where capital is scarce.
3. Balanced regional development: they can be set up in villages and small towns, reducing the crowding of industry in big cities.
4. Equitable distribution of income: ownership is spread among many small owners.
5. Use of local resources and skills.
6. Exports: handicrafts, handloom products, leather goods and sports goods earn foreign exchange.
7. Support to large industries as ancillary units.
8. Supplementary income for farm families in the off-season, reducing seasonal unemployment.
9. Short gestation period: they begin production quickly.

Adverse impacts of industrialisation.

  • Industrial pollution: air pollution (smoke, dust and gases from chimneys cause breathing diseases and acid rain); water pollution (untreated effluents kill fish and make water unsafe); land pollution (dumping of solid waste, ash and hazardous chemicals spoils soil); noise pollution (machines harm hearing and cause stress).
  • Deforestation: the large-scale cutting down of forests for factories, mines, dams, roads and industrial towns, and for timber as raw material. Effects: loss of wildlife habitat and biodiversity, soil erosion, floods, less rainfall, more carbon dioxide in the air, and loss of livelihood for forest-dwelling communities.

Remedies (meaning only).

  • Afforestation: planting trees on a large scale on land that had no forest or had lost its cover, to create new forests, for example a green belt around an industrial town. (Replanting where forests were recently cut is often called reforestation.)
  • Waste management: the collection, transport, treatment, recycling and safe disposal of waste to cause the least harm to people and the environment; for industries it includes reducing waste at source, reuse and recycling, treating effluents before discharge and safe disposal of hazardous waste, for example an effluent treatment plant.

Neighbouring topics: the meaning of industry, its link with agriculture and the types of industries are on the previous page of this chapter.

Significance of Small Industries, Industrial Pollution, Deforestation and Remedies in real life

The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.

Capital per job

Suppose Rs 10 crore is invested in one large plant that employs 500 workers, or the same Rs 10 crore is spread over 100 small units that employ 25 workers each.

Compare the capital needed per job.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Large plant: Rs 10,00,00,000 / 500 = Rs 2,00,000 per job.
  2. Small units: 100 x 25 = 2,500 jobs, so Rs 10,00,00,000 / 2,500 = Rs 40,000 per job.

Answer: Rs 2,00,000 per job in the large plant against Rs 40,000 in small units, so small units create more jobs per rupee.

Memory hook: More jobs per rupee.

Where students lose marks in Significance of Small Industries, Industrial Pollution, Deforestation and Remedies

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Writing benefits without link to India

    The answer is generic.

    Wrong working

    They create jobs

    Right working

They create many jobs per rupee, which suits India's large labour force and scarce capital

Do this: Link every point to India.

    Usually costs: 1 mark

  • Mistake: Confusing afforestation with deforestation

    The prefix is misread.

    Wrong working

    Afforestation is cutting forests

    Right working

Afforestation is planting trees to create forests

    Do this: Af means adding.

    Usually costs: 1 mark

  • Mistake: Writing only one kind of pollution

The four kinds are not listed.

    Wrong working

    Pollution is smoke

    Right working

Air, water, land and noise pollution

    Do this: Name all four.

    Usually costs: 1 mark

Exam tips

  • Link each point on small industries to India's labour force and scarce capital.
  • Give the source and the harm for every kind of pollution.
  • Write only the meaning of afforestation and waste management, with an example.
  • Use a numerical like capital per job to support the significance.

Practice questions on Significance of Small Industries, Industrial Pollution, Deforestation and Remedies

Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.

  1. Q1 · 1 mark · MCQBoard level

    Answer

    (b) waste management

  2. Q2 · 1 mark · Very short answerBoard level

    Define deforestation.

    Hint

    Cutting forests.

    Answer

Deforestation is the large-scale cutting down of forests.

  3. Q3 · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Give three reasons why cottage and small-scale industries are important for India.

    Hint

    Labour, capital, regions.

    Answer

They create many jobs with little capital, they spread industry to villages and small towns, and they earn exports and provide supplementary income to farm families (any three).

  4. Q4 · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

How does industrialisation lead to deforestation and what are two effects?

    Hint

    Land and timber needs.

    Answer

Forests are cleared for factories, mines, roads and towns, and timber is used as raw material. Effects: soil erosion and floods, loss of wildlife habitat, more carbon dioxide in the air (any two).

  5. Q5 · 3 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency

"Small industries create jobs but large industries create output." Using the capital-per-job idea, comment briefly.

    Hint

Which needs more capital per worker?

    Answer

Small, labour-intensive units need less capital per job, so a fixed amount of capital gives more jobs there, which suits India. Large industries use heavy machinery to produce large quantities, so they need much capital per worker; both are needed.

No. The syllabus asks only for the meaning of afforestation and waste management.

Why are small industries called labour-intensive?

They use more labour than capital per unit of output.

Does industry always harm the environment?

It can, which is why remedies such as waste management are needed.
