Understand Production and Marketing and Sales Departments: Meaning and Objectives

Department and departmentation. A department is a unit responsible for a group of related activities under a manager; dividing work this way is departmentation. Need: specialisation; clear responsibility and accountability; better control and coordination; efficiency and growth. The four basic departments are production, marketing and sales, finance and accounting, and human resources.

Production department. Converts inputs (raw materials, labour, machines, power) into finished goods or services of the required quantity and quality, at the right time and lowest cost (in a service firm: operations). Activities: planning and scheduling, materials control, running and maintaining machines, quality control, improving methods.
Objectives: right quality; right quantity at the right time; lowest cost by avoiding waste; best use of machines and resources; safe working conditions; continuous improvement with new technology.

Marketing and sales department. Identifies customers' needs, develops and promotes products, fixes prices, distributes and sells profitably. Begins before production (research) and continues after the sale (service). Activities: market research, product planning, pricing, branding and packaging, advertising and promotion, channels of distribution, personal selling, after-sales service.
Objectives: find customers' needs; increase sales and market share; earn profit at suitable prices; create and keep customers; build brand image and goodwill; inform customers and make products available; forecast demand.

Worked relationships. Marketing forecast of 5,000 units a month sets production's target; defects of 2% on 5,000 leave 4,900 good units.
