Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing: ICSE Class 8
Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked
The internet is a public network of networks; an intranet is private to an organisation. An ISP gives access, an IP address identifies a device, DNS turns names into IP addresses and a URL is the full address of a page. Protocols are rules: HTTP for web pages, FTP for files, TCP/IP for packets, SMTP to send and IMAP to read email. Cloud computing provides services over the internet.
Notice that DNS turns the domain name into an IP address, and only then does your device request the page from the server.

Understand Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing
Internet terms.
- Internet: a worldwide network of networks open to the public. Intranet: a private network inside an organisation, open only to its members.
- ISP: a company that provides internet access.
- IP address: a unique numeric address for each device, such as 192.168.1.10 (IPv4: four numbers from 0 to 255).
- DNS: translates names such as www.example.com into IP addresses.
- URL: the complete address of a page. In https://www.example.com/science/plants.html, https is the protocol, www.example.com the domain name and /science/plants.html the path.
- Webpage (one document), website (related webpages under one domain), web portal (a gateway to many services), hypertext and hyperlink (clickable links).
Protocols.
| Protocol | Purpose |
|---|---|
| HTTP | transfers webpages; HTTPS is the secure version |
| FTP | uploads and downloads files |
| TCP/IP | TCP breaks data into packets and reorders them; IP addresses and routes them |
| IMAP | reads email that stays on the mail server |
| SMTP | sends email |
Sending email uses SMTP; reading it on several devices uses IMAP.
Cloud computing. Using storage, software or processing over the internet on servers owned by a provider. Characteristics: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, scalability, measured service. Advantages: access anywhere, no need to buy big hardware, automatic backup, easy sharing, automatic updates. Limitations: needs a good internet connection; privacy and security depend on the provider and your password; free space is limited.
Sharing a file from a cloud drive. Sign in; upload the file; click Share and choose people by email or create a link; set permission (Viewer, Commenter or Editor); collaborators open the same file and see the latest version.
Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing: key facts
- Internet words
ISP access IP address device number DNS name to IP URL full page address Portal gateway - DNS works like a phone contact list.
- Protocols and purpose
HTTP web pages FTP files TCP/IP packets SMTP send email IMAP read email - HTTPS is the secure HTTP.
- Cloud permissions
Viewer read only Commenter comments Editor changes - Choose the lowest permission needed.

Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing in real life
The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.
A hypothetical class project
Suppose four students prepare a presentation and want everyone to edit one file from their own homes.
Which cloud steps and permission should they use?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Upload the file to a cloud drive.
- Share it by email or link.
- Set permission to Editor for the four students.
- Everyone sees the latest version automatically.
Answer: Share the file with Editor permission; all changes are saved and visible to everyone.
Memory hook: Upload, share, permit.
Tricks to remember Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing
Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.
S sends, I reads
SMTP sends mail; IMAP reads it.
Use it when: Email protocols.
DNS = contact list
DNS turns a name into a number like a phone book.
Use it when: Explaining DNS.
Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing: solved examples
Ordered from board level to HOTS. Try each one before you open the solution.
Example 1: Reading mail on two devices · 1 mark · MCQBoard level
A student wants to read the same mailbox on her phone and her laptop, with the mail staying on the server. Which protocol makes this possible?
(a) SMTP (b) IMAP (c) FTP (d) HTTP
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- IMAP keeps mail on the server.
- SMTP sends mail.
Answer: (b) IMAP.
Example 2: Parts of a URL · 3 marks · Short answerBoard level
In https://www.example.com/science/plants.html name the protocol, the domain name and the path. (3 marks)
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Protocol: https (1).
- Domain name: www.example.com (1).
- Path: /science/plants.html (1).
Answer: Protocol https, domain name www.example.com, path /science/plants.html.
Example 3: Internet versus intranet · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level
Explain the difference between the internet and an intranet with an example of each. (3 marks)
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Internet is a public worldwide network (1).
- An intranet is private to an organisation (1).
- Example: websites versus a school portal for teachers (1).
Answer: The internet is a worldwide public network of networks, for example any public website. An intranet is a private network inside an organisation using internet technology, open only to its members, such as a school portal for teachers.
Example 4: Role of TCP and IP · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Explain how TCP and IP together deliver a file across the internet. (4 marks)
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- TCP breaks data into packets (1).
- IP gives addresses and routes each packet (1).
- TCP checks all packets arrive (1).
- TCP puts them back in order (1).
Answer: TCP splits the data into packets, checks that all arrive and reorders them. IP gives each packet its address and routes it to the right device. Together they deliver the complete file.
Example 5: Cloud decision · 4 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency
A student keeps all project work only on a pen drive that she loses. Give three advantages of cloud storage that would have helped and one limitation she must plan for. (4 marks)
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Access from anywhere (1).
- Automatic backup so the files are safe (1).
- Easy sharing with a partner (1).
- Limitation: needs a good internet connection or has limited free space (1).
Answer: A cloud drive would give access anywhere, an automatic backup of the files, and easy sharing with her partner. She must plan for the need for a good internet connection and the limited free space.
Where students lose marks in Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing
The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Swapping SMTP and IMAP
SMTP sends and IMAP reads.
Wrong working
IMAP sends email.
Right working
SMTP sends email; IMAP reads it.
Do this: S for send.
Usually costs: 1 mark
Mistake: Writing URL as the website name only
A URL includes the protocol and path.
Wrong working
URL is www.example.com.
Right working
URL is the complete address, with protocol and path.
Do this: Name the three parts.
Usually costs: 1 mark
Mistake: Saying the cloud has no limits
Cloud needs the internet and has free limits.
Wrong working
The cloud works without internet.
Right working
It needs a good internet connection.
Do this: State one limitation.
Usually costs: 1 mark
Exam tips
- Give full forms: URL, ISP, DNS, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, IMAP.
- Link each protocol to one task.
- Always give an advantage and a limitation of cloud computing.
- Use the IP example with four numbers from 0 to 255.
Practice questions on Internet Terms, Protocols and Cloud Computing
Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.
Q1 · 1 mark · MCQBoard level
What does DNS do?
(a) Sends email (b) Converts domain names to IP addresses (c) Stores files (d) Protects against virusesHint
Names to numbers.
Answer
(b) Converts domain names to IP addresses.
Q2 · 2 marks · Short answerBoard level
State the difference between a website and a webpage. (2 marks)
Hint
One document versus a collection.
Answer
A webpage is a single document on the web; a website is a collection of related webpages under one domain, starting from a home page.
Q3 · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level
Why is HTTPS preferred to HTTP when entering a password? (3 marks)
Hint
Encrypted.
Answer
HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP; the data is encrypted, shown by a padlock, so passwords are harder to steal on the way.
Q4 · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Explain how IMAP and SMTP are both used when a student emails a friend who reads it on a phone and a laptop. (4 marks)
Hint
One sends, one reads.
Answer
The student's mail app uses SMTP to send the message to the mail server. The friend's phone and laptop use IMAP to read it, because with IMAP the email stays on the server, so the same mailbox shows on both devices.
Q5 · 4 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency
A user says "the cloud is just my computer's hard disk". Correct this with two points and mention a risk. (4 marks)
Hint
Whose computers?
Answer
The cloud is storage and software on servers owned by a provider in large data centres, accessed over the internet, not on the user's own disk. It can be reached from any device with internet and is backed up by the provider. A risk is that privacy and security depend on the provider and the user's password.
