Adolescence: Physical and Emotional Changes, Personal Hygiene and Stress Management (ICSE Class 8)

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Adolescence is the stage between childhood and adulthood, roughly 11 to 19 years, when hormones from the pituitary, testes and ovaries bring physical changes (growth spurt, voice change, menstruation) and emotional changes (mood swings). Hygiene matters because sweat and oil glands become active; stress can be managed by yoga, meditation, time management, sports, hobbies and rational thinking.

Notice that the pituitary controls the testes and ovaries, whose hormones cause the changes of adolescence, roughly ages 11 to 19.

Understand Adolescence: Changes, Personal Hygiene and Stress Management

Adolescence. The period between childhood and adulthood, roughly 11 to 19 years. Puberty is its beginning, when the body becomes able to reproduce. Timing varies from person to person; girls often start a year or two earlier than boys.

Hormones in control. The pituitary signals the testes to make testosterone (boys) and the ovaries to make oestrogen (girls).

Physical changes in both.

  • Growth spurt in height and weight.
  • Hair in the armpits and pubic region.
  • More active sweat and oil glands: body odour, pimples (acne).

In boys. Voice box (larynx) grows, forming the Adam's apple; voice deepens; hair on face and chest; broader shoulders and stronger muscles; testes begin to make sperms.

In girls. Breasts develop; hips widen; menstruation begins as the ovaries start releasing eggs; voice becomes slightly higher.

Emotional and social changes. Mood swings; wish for independence; self-consciousness about looks; strong influence of friends (peer pressure); curiosity and new interests. These are normal.

Personal hygiene.

  • Bathe daily; wear clean clothes and undergarments; wash the face; do not squeeze pimples.
  • Girls change sanitary pads regularly during periods.
  • Brush teeth twice a day; keep hair and nails clean.
  • Eat a balanced diet with protein, iron and calcium; drink water; sleep 8 to 9 hours.

Stress. Mental or emotional pressure felt in a demanding situation (exams, peer pressure, arguments). A little can motivate; too much harms sleep, appetite, health and studies.

Ways to tackle stress.

MethodHow it helps
Yoga, meditationcalms the mind, slows breathing
Time managementplan work with breaks so it does not pile up
Sports, exerciserelease tension, improve mood
Hobbiesmusic, art, reading, gardening
Rational thinkingview the problem calmly, break it into small steps

Also talk to trusted adults. Avoid tobacco, alcohol or drugs: they are harmful, not coping.

Flow chart: hormonal trigger. Pituitary → testes (testosterone) in boys / ovaries (oestrogen) in girls → body changes of puberty.

Exam worries

Suppose a Class 8 girl has three tests in one week and finds she cannot sleep, snaps at her family and forgets what she has learnt.

Name her problem and suggest three ways to manage it.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution

Suppose a boy who grew about 5 cm a year grows 9 cm in the year he turns 13 and is hungrier than before.

Why is his appetite higher and what should his diet include?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution

  2. His diet should include protein, iron and calcium, with water.
  3. The extra growth is 9 - 5 = 4 cm more than usual in that year.

Answer: The growth spurt needs more nutrients; protein, iron and calcium; 4 cm extra growth.

Memory hook: Bigger growth needs bigger diet.
