Reflection in the Lines x = a and y = a: Rules, Mirror Lines and Graph Questions (ICSE Class 10)

Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Reflection in the vertical line x = a sends (x, y) to (2a − x, y); reflection in the horizontal line y = a sends (x, y) to (x, 2a − y). The mirror line passes through the midpoint of a point and its image, so a mirror line can be found by averaging the coordinates that change.

The mirror x = 2 sits exactly midway between P and P', so y stays 1 and x becomes 2(2) − 5 = −1.

Understand Reflection in the Lines x = a and y = a

The axes are special mirror lines ( and ). The ICSE syllabus also includes reflection in any line parallel to an axis: (vertical) and (horizontal).

**Reflection in .** The line is vertical, so a point moves horizontally; is unchanged. The mirror is the midpoint of and its image : , so .

**Reflection in .** The line is horizontal, so the point moves vertically; is unchanged:

Check with : these become and , the y-axis and x-axis rules.

Counting squares. On graph paper, count how far the point is from the mirror and go the same distance beyond it. is 3 units right of , so its image is 3 units left of it, at ; indeed .

Finding the mirror line. If and its image share the same , the mirror is vertical: . If they share the same , it is horizontal: . Once the line is known, reflect other points in it.

Lines named by points. A question may say 'reflect in the line '. Work out that line first: in 2024 Q3(iii), and lie on , so reflects to . The examiners reported candidates who reflected in the x-axis instead, getting .

Two parallel mirrors. Reflecting in and then in shifts every point sideways by . Two perpendicular mirrors and act like a 'reflection in the point' .

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Vertical mirror: ; stays 3.
  2. Check: the midpoint of and is , on the mirror.

Answer: At .

Memory hook: As far behind the mirror as in front of it.

Reflection in a horizontal line

Imagine a lake whose straight shore lies along on a map grid, with a lamp post at reflected in the still water.

Where does the lamp's reflection appear, and how far is it from the lamp?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Horizontal mirror: ; stays 5.
  2. Distance units, twice the lamp's distance of 5 from the shore.

Answer: At , 10 units from the lamp.

Memory hook: Image distance = twice the distance to the mirror.

Where students lose marks in Reflection in the Lines x = a and y = a

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Reflecting in an axis instead of the stated line

The mirror is the line named, here (), not the x-axis.

    Wrong working

    reflected in : .

    Right working

    is : .

Do this: Write the equation of the mirror line before reflecting.

Usually costs: Reported in 2024 Q3(iii); the image and the figure's name both go wrong.

  • Mistake: Changing the wrong coordinate

    A vertical mirror changes only.

    Wrong working

    in : .

    Right working

    .

Do this: The letter in the mirror's equation is the one that changes.

    Usually costs: The whole answer.

  • Mistake: Using a − x instead of 2a − x

The image is as far beyond the mirror as the point is before it.

    Wrong working

    in : .

    Right working

(check: midpoint of 5 and is 2).

Do this: Check with the midpoint every time.

    Usually costs: Accuracy marks.

Exam tips

  • 2024 Q3(iii) (5 marks) reflected and in the y-axis, then in the line ; the figure was a square, and calling it a rhombus or kite lost the mark.
  • Draw and label the mirror line (, , …) on the graph; it shows the examiner your method.
  • To prove a square, show the diagonals are equal, perpendicular and bisect each other, or that all sides are equal and an angle is .
  • Read every 'reflect in' carefully: axis, origin, or a named line.

Reflection in the Lines x = a and y = a: frequently asked questions

What is the image of a point in the line x = a?

(x, y) maps to (2a − x, y). For example, (5, 1) in x = 2 maps to (−1, 1), because 2 is midway between 5 and −1.

How do I find the mirror line from a point and its image?

If the y-coordinates are equal, the mirror is x = average of the x-coordinates; if the x-coordinates are equal, it is y = average of the y-coordinates.

Does the ICSE syllabus include reflection in lines like y = x?

No. The CISCE syllabus lists reflection in x = 0, y = 0, x = a, y = a and the origin only.
