Continued Proportion, Mean Proportional and Third Proportional (ICSE Class 10)
Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Three quantities a, b, c are in continued proportion when a : b = b : c, that is b² = ac. Then b is the mean proportional between a and c (b = √(ac)), and c is the third proportional to a and b (c = b²/a). The fourth proportional to a, b, c is d = bc/a.
Each term is the one before times the same number (here 2), so the middle term squared equals first times last: 6² = 3 × 12.

Understand Continued Proportion and Mean Proportional
Four quantities are in proportion, written , when , that is when (product of extremes = product of means). Here is called the fourth proportional to , and :
Continued proportion. When the second and third terms are the same, , the three quantities are said to be in continued proportion. Then
- is the mean proportional between and : (for positive quantities).
- is the third proportional to and : .
Each term is obtained from the one before by multiplying by the same number , so in continued proportion are , the first three terms of a G.P. For example, 3, 6, 12 (), or 9, 12, 16 ().
Order matters. 'The third proportional to 6 and 9' means , so . 'The mean proportional between 6 and 9' is . Do not mix the two.
Typical questions.
1. Find a mean, third or fourth proportional (often with decimals or algebra).
2. Find so that given expressions are in continued proportion: write (middle) = (first)(last) and solve.
3. Prove an identity for quantities in continued proportion. Two routes: replace by wherever it appears, or put , (the -method) and show both sides equal the same expression in and .
For four quantities in continued proportion, , each is times the previous: .

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Confusing the mean and third proportionals
They are different terms of the continued proportion.
Wrong working
Third proportional to 6 and 9: .
Right working
; is the mean proportional.
Do this: Write the proportion and see which term is missing.
Usually costs: The whole question.
Mistake: Using the arithmetic mean
The mean proportional is the geometric mean , not .
Wrong working
Mean proportional of 5 and 45 .
Right working
.
Do this: Remember 'middle squared = ends multiplied'.
Usually costs: The MCQ.
Mistake: Wrong order for the fourth proportional
gives , not .
Wrong working
Fourth proportional to 4, 7, 12: .

Exam tips
- Write the definition line (' in continued proportion ⇒ ') in every proof; it is the key method mark.
- For decimals, convert to whole numbers where possible (0.08 × 0.18 = 144 × 10⁻⁴).
- For 'find x' questions, the terms usually cancel, leaving a linear equation.
- Check your answer by showing the two ratios are equal.

Continued Proportion and Mean Proportional: frequently asked questions
What does continued proportion mean?
Three quantities a, b, c are in continued proportion if a : b = b : c. Equivalently b² = ac, so each term is the same multiple of the one before.
How do I find the mean proportional between two numbers?
Multiply the two numbers and take the square root. For 4 and 9 it is √36 = 6.
What is the difference between third and fourth proportional?
The third proportional to a and b is c with a : b = b : c, so c = b²/a. The fourth proportional to a, b, c is d with a : b = c : d, so d = bc/a.
