Cyclic Quadrilateral Properties: Opposite Angles and the Exterior Angle (ICSE Class 10)

Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked

A cyclic quadrilateral has all four vertices on one circle. Its opposite angles are supplementary, so $\angle A + \angle C = 180^\circ$ and $\angle B + \angle D = 180^\circ$. When a side is produced, the exterior angle formed equals the interior opposite angle. Opposite angles are never simply 'equal'.

Opposite angles A and C (and B and D) add to 180°, and the exterior angle CBE matches the interior opposite angle D.

Understand Cyclic Quadrilateral Properties

A cyclic quadrilateral is a quadrilateral whose four vertices all lie on one circle. The CISCE syllabus lists two cyclic properties under Circles.

1. Opposite angles are supplementary (proof to be taught). In cyclic quadrilateral , and .

*Proof.* Let be the centre. The arc subtends at the centre and at , so . The arc subtends reflex at the centre and at , so . Adding, . Since the four angles add to , as well.

2. Exterior angle equals the interior opposite angle (without proof). If side is produced to , then . It follows at once from property 1: .

What these properties tell you about special quadrilaterals.

  • A parallelogram has equal opposite angles; if it is cyclic they must both be , so it is a rectangle.
  • A trapezium with that is cyclic has (co-interior) and (cyclic), so : it is an isosceles trapezium.
  • A kite with and has ; if it is cyclic, both are and is a diameter.

Combining with other theorems. Most board questions mix this with the angle at the centre (for example ), angles in the same segment, and isosceles triangles. In 2025 Q1(vi) the examiners report that candidates treated opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral as equal and chose the wrong option.

Writing reasons. Use short standard reasons: '(opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral)', '(exterior angle of a cyclic quadrilateral)'.

How to solve Cyclic Quadrilateral Properties questions

Pair each angle with its opposite angle, then bring in the other circle theorems for angles made by diagonals.

  1. 1Read the vertices in order round the circle and mark the opposite pairs: with , with .
  2. 2If an angle is given, its opposite angle is minus it.
  3. 3If a side is produced, the exterior angle equals the interior angle at the opposite vertex.
  4. 4For angles formed by a diagonal, use angles in the same segment or the angle sum of a triangle.
  5. 5If angles are given in , set opposite angles to add to and solve; then check all four add to .
  6. 6Write the reason for every angle.

Tricks to remember Cyclic Quadrilateral Properties

Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.

  • Across adds to 180

Corners across the circle add to ; corners next to each other need not.

Use it when: Avoiding the 'opposite angles are equal' trap.

  • Outside equals opposite

Produce a side: the outside angle copies the inside angle at the far corner.

Use it when: Exterior-angle questions in one line.

  • Cyclic special shapes

Cyclic parallelogram → rectangle; cyclic trapezium → isosceles; cyclic kite → right angles at the side corners.

Use it when: Assertion–reason and proof questions.

Where students lose marks in Cyclic Quadrilateral Properties

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Taking opposite angles as equal

In a cyclic quadrilateral opposite angles add to ; they are equal only when both are .

    Wrong working

    , so .

    Right working

    .

Do this: Say 'supplementary' every time you use the property.

Usually costs: Reported in 2025 Q1(vi): candidates believed the opposite angles were equal and chose $60^\circ$.

  • Mistake: Pairing adjacent angles

and are next to each other; only – and – are opposite.

    Wrong working

    , so .

    Right working

    ; needs other information.

Do this: Trace the vertices round the circle in order before pairing.

Usually costs: The part, and any later angle that depends on it.

  • Mistake: Exterior angle matched to the wrong vertex

The exterior angle at equals the interior angle at , the vertex opposite .

    Wrong working

    produced to : .

    Right working

    .

Do this: The exterior angle copies the angle at the far corner.

Usually costs: 1 mark per angle in a 3-mark part.

Exam tips

  • 2025 Q1(vi) (1 mark): equal chords and a cyclic quadrilateral; the report notes candidates took opposite angles as equal instead of supplementary, or ignored the isosceles triangle.
  • 2024 Q7(i) (3 marks) combined circle angles with a tangent; the examiners ask for a reason with every circle-theorem answer.
  • Check your four angles add to before moving on.
  • The opposite-angles theorem must be proved if asked; the exterior-angle property is 'without proof'.

Cyclic Quadrilateral Properties: frequently asked questions

What is a cyclic quadrilateral?

A quadrilateral whose four vertices all lie on the same circle. Its opposite angles always add up to 180°.

Are the opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral equal?

No. They are supplementary (sum 180°). They are equal only in the special case where both are 90°, as in a rectangle.

Which cyclic quadrilateral property is without proof in ICSE?

The exterior angle property. The proof that opposite angles are supplementary is to be taught and can be asked.
