The Non-Aligned Movement: Meaning, Architects, Objectives, Panchsheel and the Role of Nehru (ICSE Class 10 History)

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Non-alignment means staying out of the Cold War power blocs and judging issues on merit. The Non-Aligned Movement was formally founded at the Belgrade Conference in September 1961 by Jawaharlal Nehru, Nasser, Tito, Sukarno and Nkrumah. Its objectives include independence from blocs, opposing imperialism and racism, peace, disarmament and development. Panchsheel means the five principles of peaceful coexistence.

NAM stands between the two Cold War blocs and refuses to join either; five leaders, including Nehru, founded it at Belgrade in 1961.

Understand Non-Aligned Movement: Meaning, Objectives, Panchsheel and Role of Nehru

1. Background. After the Second World War the world divided into the US-led Western bloc (NATO) and the USSR-led Eastern bloc (Warsaw Pact). Many newly independent countries did not wish to become pawns in the Cold War and chose an independent foreign policy.

2. Meaning of non-alignment. Not joining either power bloc or its military alliances, and keeping the freedom to decide every international issue on merit. It is not neutrality or isolation: a neutral state keeps away from conflicts altogether, whereas a non-aligned state takes an active part in world affairs and speaks up against injustice and aggression.

3. Founding and architects. The idea grew at the Asian-African Conference at Bandung, Indonesia (1955). NAM was formally founded at the first summit at Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in September 1961, attended by 25 countries. Architects: Jawaharlal Nehru (India), Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt), Josip Broz Tito (Yugoslavia), Sukarno (Indonesia), Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana).

4. Objectives.
1. Keep away from military alliances and blocs and protect the independence and sovereignty of members.
2. Oppose imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism and racism, including apartheid.
3. Work for world peace and peaceful coexistence.
4. Promote disarmament, especially nuclear disarmament.
5. Strengthen the United Nations.
6. Promote economic development and cooperation among developing countries and a fair international economic order.
7. Settle disputes by peaceful means.

5. Panchsheel (meaning only). Panchsheel means five principles. It refers to the five principles of peaceful coexistence first set out in the India-China agreement of 1954, in the time of Nehru and Zhou Enlai, and later part of the thinking of NAM. Only the meaning is tested; for understanding the five principles are mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, mutual non-interference in internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

6. Role of Jawaharlal Nehru.
1. Architect of India's non-alignment: he kept India out of both blocs because a newly independent country needed peace and freedom of action for development.
2. A founder of NAM with Nasser and Tito, leading at Bandung (1955) and Belgrade (1961).
3. Promoted Panchsheel and peaceful coexistence.
4. Opposed colonialism and racism; supported freedom movements and condemned apartheid.
5. Advocated disarmament and an end to nuclear weapons tests and worked to strengthen the UN.
6. Gave India a respected voice; for example India helped in peaceful settlement efforts such as chairing the commission on prisoners of war after the Korean War.

7. Why new nations chose non-alignment. To protect newly won freedom; to concentrate on development and avoid being dragged into wars; to accept aid and technology from both sides; to work together against colonialism and racism; and to moderate the blocs and reduce the danger of a world war.

"Non-alignment gave India freedom of action in the Cold War." Evaluate. [5]

    Hint
