Airways and Waterways: Inland and Coastal (ICSE Class 10 Geography)
Updated 17 October 2026 · Draft, not yet fact-checked
Airways are the fastest mode, able to cross mountains, forests, deserts and seas and reach north-east India, Jammu and Kashmir and the islands, and vital in emergencies, but they are the most expensive and carry small loads. Waterways, inland and coastal, are the cheapest mode for heavy and bulky goods, fuel-efficient and less polluting, but slow and limited to navigable rivers and coasts. Many peninsular rivers are not navigable because they are seasonal and flow over rocky, uneven plateau beds with rapids, waterfalls and steep gradients.
Airways win on speed and reach but cost most and carry little; waterways are cheapest for heavy goods but slow and limited to rivers and coasts.

Understand Airways and Waterways: Inland and Coastal
1. Airways: advantages.
1. The fastest mode of transport, saving time over long distances.
2. Can cross mountains, forests, deserts and seas, so it is the most efficient way to reach difficult areas such as north-east India, Jammu and Kashmir and the islands.
3. Very useful in emergencies: helicopters and aircraft deliver relief and rescue people during floods, earthquakes and other disasters when roads and railways are cut.
4. Important for defence.
5. Suitable for perishable and valuable goods and for international travel and tourism.
2. Why air travel has become popular. Speed and time saving, rising incomes, lower fares with more airlines and airports, and its ability to connect remote areas. Examiners do not accept 'comfortable and safe' alone as a reason.
3. Airways: disadvantages. The most expensive mode; small load capacity, so unsuitable for bulky goods; affected by bad weather (fog, storms); high fuel use and pollution.
4. Waterways.
- Inland waterways use rivers, canals, lakes and backwaters. Important national waterways include the Ganga (Haldia to Prayagraj), the Brahmaputra (Dhubri to Sadiya) and the West Coast Canal in Kerala.
- Coastal shipping carries goods between ports along India's long coastline, such as coal, iron ore, petroleum and salt.
5. Waterways: advantages.
1. The cheapest mode for heavy and bulky goods.
2. Fuel-efficient and less polluting.
3. No track or road needs to be built on natural waterways, so maintenance cost is low.
4. Coastal shipping relieves pressure on railways and links ports.
6. Waterways: disadvantages.
1. Slow.
2. Limited to navigable rivers and coasts, with no door-to-door service.
3. Many rivers are seasonal, with low water in the dry season, and silting reduces depth.
4. Floods and storms disrupt services.
7. Why many peninsular rivers are not navigable. They are seasonal, fed by rain, so low or dry in summer. They flow over rocky, uneven plateau beds with rapids, waterfalls and steep gradients.
8. Quick comparison.
- Fastest: air. Cheapest for bulk: water. Cheapest land mode for bulk: rail.
- Best for disasters when roads and rails are cut: air.
- Best for the north-east, J&K and islands: air.

How to answer Airways and Waterways: Inland and Coastal questions
Choose the mode by matching speed, cost, load and terrain, then justify it.
- 1Read the situation: perishable or bulky, short or long distance, normal or emergency, easy or difficult terrain.
- 2Name the mode, then give two reasons from its advantages.
- 3For popularity of air travel, give speed, rising incomes, lower fares and connectivity, not just comfort.
- 4For waterways, mention both inland and coastal types where the question allows.
- 5For navigability questions, link the cause to the river: seasonal flow and rocky, uneven beds.
Airways and Waterways: Inland and Coastal in real life
The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.

Which mode of transport would be used first, and why?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Air transport: helicopters and aircraft can fly over the damaged roads and reach the cut-off areas.
- It is also the fastest mode, which matters in an emergency.
Answer: Airways, because they are fast and not affected by cut roads and rail lines.
Memory hook: When land fails, air flies.
Shipping salt and coal along the coast
Suppose a company has to move a very large quantity of coal from one port to another port on India's coast and is not in a hurry.
Which mode would be cheapest and what is the trade-off?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Coastal shipping is the cheapest mode for heavy and bulky cargo.
- The trade-off is that it is slow and has no door-to-door service.
Answer: Coastal shipping: cheap for bulk, but slow.
Memory hook: Heavy and no hurry: ship.
Tricks to remember Airways and Waterways: Inland and Coastal
Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.
Air is fast and costly, water is slow and cheap
The two modes sit at opposite ends of the speed-cost scale.
Use it when: Comparison questions.
Why peninsular rivers fail
Seasonal flow plus rocky beds with rapids and waterfalls means no steady navigation.
Use it when: Navigability reasons.
Three national waterways
Ganga (Haldia-Prayagraj), Brahmaputra (Dhubri-Sadiya), West Coast Canal (Kerala).
Use it when: Naming inland waterways.
