ICSE Class 10 English Composition: Topic Parts, Structure and Marking
Updated 18 October 2026 · Draft, not yet fact-checked
Question 1 of ICSE English Paper 1 carries 20 marks: one composition of 300 to 350 words from five topics (story, personal account, for-or-against argument, description and picture). Read every part of the topic, plan for five minutes, write five paragraphs of about 60 to 70 words or six of about 50 to 58 words, and keep to 30 minutes. Examiners reward content, organisation and expression.
Spend 5 minutes planning, 20 writing and 5 checking, and shape five paragraphs of about 60–70 words to reach 300–350 words.

Understand Board Composition: Topic Parts, Structure and Marking (ICSE Class 10)
The question. The chapter page describes Question 1 as the biggest question on the paper: 20 of 80 marks, five topics, one to write, not more than 30 minutes.
Read all the parts. Most topics have two or three parts joined by "and". A personal-account topic may ask for the incident, what went wrong, your response and what you learnt. Underline each part and give each its own paragraph. Misreading the topic is listed among the common errors.
Story. Plot: setting, conflict, rising moment, climax, resolution. Use two or three characters and a little dialogue. If the topic gives opening or closing words, use them exactly.
Personal account. First person, past tense, a believable Class X experience, with feelings, the part where things went wrong, and a closing lesson.
Argument. State one clear side in paragraph one, give three reasons in separate paragraphs with examples, answer one opposite view and restate the stand.
Description. Use the five senses, a clear order and precise words. If the topic asks for a change or a reflection, give that part a full paragraph.
Picture. There must be a clear link between the picture and the composition. Find the central idea (effort, joy, loneliness, hope) instead of listing items.
Plan and length. About five minutes of planning, twenty minutes of writing and five of checking. Five paragraphs of about 60 to 70 words, or six of about 50 to 58 words, give 300 to 350 words.
Marking. Content (relevance to every part), organisation (paragraphs, sequence, opening, ending) and expression (grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation).

Example 2: Count the parts (2 marks) · 2 marks · Short answerBoard level
How many parts does this topic have? "You were blamed for a classroom prank. Give an account of the incident and how you proved your innocence."
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- The incident (1)
- Proving innocence (1).
Answer: Two parts: the incident and how innocence was proved, so each needs its own paragraph.
Example 3: Plan a personal account (4 marks) · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Write a plan of five paragraphs for "A time when you wrongly believed a friend had let you down. What happened and what did you learn?"
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Opening (1)
- Incident and mistake (1)
- Discovery (1)
- Lesson (1).
Answer: 1 The day of the school trip and my expectation. 2 What seemed like the betrayal. 3 My angry reaction. 4 Discovering the truth. 5 What I learnt about asking before judging.
Example 4: Argument paragraph (4 marks) · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Write the opening paragraph (about 50 words) for or against: "More collaboration, less competition is what schools need."
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Stand (1)
- Reason hint (1)
- Clear language (1)
- Link to topic (1).
Answer: I firmly agree that schools need more collaboration and less competition. When pupils work together, weaker learners gain confidence, ideas multiply and everyone shares the credit. Constant competition leaves many feeling like failures, while teamwork prepares them for real life. Healthy teamwork also teaches pupils to listen, share responsibility and respect different talents.
Example 5: Picture without itemising (4 marks) · 4 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency
A picture shows a girl pushing a cart of books along a village road. State two ways to link a composition to it without merely listing what is visible.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Central idea (1)
- Link one (1)
- Link two (1)
- Avoid itemising (1).
Answer: Central idea: effort and access to learning. A story could follow the girl running a mobile library for her village; a reflection could argue that a book delivered is a door opened. Both use details as support for an idea.

Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.
Q1 · 1 mark · MCQBoard level
The paper advises how much time for the composition?
(a) 10 minutes (b) 20 minutes (c) 30 minutes (d) 60 minutesHint
See the chapter page.
Answer
(c) 30 minutes.
Q2 · 3 marks · Short answerBoard level
List the five kinds of topic in the board composition. (3 marks)
Hint
Story, account, argument, description, picture.
Answer
Original story, personal account, for-or-against argument, descriptive account and picture composition.
Q3 · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Write a six-line plan for an argument for or against "Too many cooks spoil the broth" in school group projects. (4 marks)
Hint
Stand then reasons.
Answer
Stand: agree that too many cooks spoil group projects. Reason 1: unclear roles. Reason 2: delays from disagreement. Reason 3: weaker work as ideas clash. Opposite view: shared skills. Conclusion: clear roles solve the problem.
Q4 · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Write the opening paragraph (about 60 words) for a story that must begin with: "The lights went out just as the hall began to fill." (4 marks)
Hint
Use the opening words exactly.
Answer
The lights went out just as the hall began to fill. A murmur rose, then a nervous laugh. Mrs Rao felt for the main switch with trembling fingers, while two hundred parents waited in the dark and the first act of the play was about to begin. Somewhere a child began to cry, and the teacher's calm voice failed to steady the room.
Q5 · 4 marks · Case-basedHarder board level
A description topic asks: "A quiet lane before dawn. How does it change as the shops open?" A student only describes the quiet lane. State the content fault and how to repair the plan. (4 marks)
Hint
Count the parts.
Answer
The change part is missing. The plan should give about two paragraphs to the quiet lane (senses, order) and two to the change as shops open (sounds, people, smells), with a closing reflection.
Q6 · 4 marks · Case-basedHOTS / competency
Two students answer a picture topic. One lists ten things in the picture; the other builds a story around the central idea of waiting. Compare the likely marks for content and organisation with reasons. (4 marks)
Hint
Itemising is penalised.
Answer
The second would earn more: the idea gives a link and structure. The first only itemises, with weak organisation and no development.
Test your recall
Answer in your head or on paper first, then open the card. Pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick far better than re-reading.
