NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, ATM, Debit and Credit Cards (ICSE Class 10 Commercial Studies)

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Internet banking lets customers use bank services through a website or app. NEFT transfers money in batches, RTGS settles large payments one by one in real time, IMPS transfers money instantly at all hours, and a mobile wallet holds prepaid money in a phone app. A debit card spends the customer's own balance; a credit card spends the bank's credit, to be repaid later.

Notice how NEFT sends batches, RTGS sends one large payment at a time, IMPS is instant, and debit uses your own money while credit is repaid later.

Understand NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, ATM, Debit Cards and Credit Cards

1. Internet banking

Internet (net or online) banking is a facility by which customers use banking services through the bank's website or app with a user ID and password: checking the balance and statement, transferring funds, paying bills, opening deposits and requesting cheque books, from anywhere and at any time.

2. Modes of transferring money (meaning only)

  • NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer): transfers funds from an account in one bank to an account in another bank; transactions are settled in batches at regular intervals, not one by one. No minimum amount, so useful for small and medium payments. The sender needs the receiver's name, account number and the branch's IFSC.
  • RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement): each transaction is settled individually and immediately (real time, gross basis). Meant for large payments, with a minimum of ₹2 lakh; once done, it is final.
  • IMPS (Immediate Payment Service): instant interbank transfer through mobile, internet banking or ATMs, available round the clock including holidays; suits urgent smaller payments.
  • Mobile wallet: a prepaid digital wallet in a mobile app; money is loaded from a bank account or card and used to pay at shops, for bills and online purchases, or to send money, usually by scanning a QR code.

3. ATM

An Automated Teller Machine allows customers to carry out basic banking transactions without a bank clerk, with a debit or credit card and a Personal Identification Number (PIN): cash withdrawal, balance enquiry, mini statement, PIN change, fund transfer and in some machines cash deposit. It is available at all hours and reduces crowds in branches.

4. Debit card and credit card

  • Debit card: issued by a bank to an account holder and linked to the account. Each purchase or withdrawal is deducted at once from the customer's own balance, so spending is limited to the balance.
  • Credit card: allows the holder to buy goods and services, or withdraw cash, on credit up to a sanctioned limit. The bank pays the seller and the holder repays later. If the bill is paid in full by the due date there is no interest; otherwise interest and late fees are charged.

5. Precautions

  • Never share the PIN, OTP, CVV or card number with anyone, even someone claiming to be from the bank.
  • Shield the keypad; check for hidden devices (skimmers) on the card slot; do not take help from strangers.
  • Collect the card, cash and receipt; do not write the PIN on the card; change it regularly.
  • Use cards only on secure (https) websites; enable SMS alerts and check statements.
  • Block a lost card at once and report any unknown transaction.

6. Choosing

Use NEFT for non-urgent small amounts, IMPS for urgent small amounts, RTGS for a large sum that must reach the same day.

7. Limit

The modes of transfer are meaning only: do not write long procedures.

How to answer NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, ATM, Debit Cards and Credit Cards questions

Expect the meaning of each mode, the difference between debit and credit cards, and precautions.

  1. 1Match the key phrase: batches (NEFT), real time and large (RTGS), instant and anytime (IMPS), prepaid app (wallet).
  2. 2For card differences, write both sides on the source of money, time of payment, limit and interest.
  3. 3For precautions give four or five distinct points, each as an action.
  4. 4In a case, say which mode or card suits the situation and why.

NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, ATM, Debit Cards and Credit Cards in real life

The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.

Debit versus credit card

Suppose Meera has ₹15,000 in her account and a credit card limit of ₹60,000. She wants to buy a ₹18,000 appliance.

What happens with each card?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. A debit card is limited to the balance: ₹18,000 exceeds ₹15,000, so it is declined.
  2. A credit card is within the limit of ₹60,000: it is accepted and the bill is repaid later.

Answer: The debit card is declined; the credit card is accepted.

Memory hook: Debit is your money, credit is the bank's.

Choice of transfer mode

Imagine a trader who must pay ₹12,00,000 to a supplier the same day, and a student who must urgently send ₹800 to a friend at night.

Which mode suits each?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. A large amount needing immediate settlement suits RTGS.
  2. An urgent small amount at night suits IMPS, which works at all hours.

Answer: RTGS for the trader; IMPS for the student.

Memory hook: Big and now: RTGS. Small and now: IMPS.

Tricks to remember NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, ATM, Debit Cards and Credit Cards

Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.

  • NEFT waits, RTGS rushes

NEFT waits for the next batch; RTGS goes at once for big sums; IMPS is instant for smaller ones.

    Use it when: Distinguishing modes.

Where students lose marks in NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, ATM, Debit Cards and Credit Cards

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Mixing up NEFT and RTGS

    Both are interbank transfers.

    Wrong working

RTGS is in batches; NEFT is real time.

    Right working

NEFT is settled in batches; RTGS is real time, individually.

Do this: NEFT waits, RTGS rushes.

    Usually costs: 2 marks.

  • Mistake: Writing that a credit card deducts money at once

    Confusion with debit.

    Wrong working

A credit card deducts the amount from the account immediately.

    Right working

A debit card deducts at once; a credit card allows payment later.

Do this: Debit: your own money.

    Usually costs: 1-2 marks.

  • Mistake: Vague precautions

    Answers are in general terms.

    Wrong working

    Be careful at the ATM.

    Right working

Do not share the PIN; cover the keypad; check for hidden devices.

    Do this: Write specific actions.

    Usually costs: 1-2 marks.

  • Mistake: Giving long procedures for modes of transfer

    The syllabus says meaning only.

    Wrong working

Steps for adding a beneficiary and entering IFSC.

A short meaning with one feature.

Do this: Keep to the limit.

    Usually costs: Time, 0-1 mark.

  • For NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and mobile wallets write the meaning in two lines with one feature.
  • In the debit versus credit table use source, time of payment, limit and interest.
  • Precautions earn marks only if they are specific actions.
  • Mention that banks never ask for PIN, OTP or CVV.

Practice questions on NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, ATM, Debit Cards and Credit Cards

Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.

  1. Q1 · 2 marks · Very short answerBoard level

State the meaning of IMPS and mobile wallet.

    Hint

    Instant; prepaid.

    Answer

IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) is an instant, round-the-clock interbank transfer through mobile, internet banking or ATMs. A mobile wallet is a prepaid digital wallet in a phone app, loaded with money and used to pay or to send money.

  2. Q2 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Suppose a trader asks whether to use NEFT or RTGS to send ₹50,000 and ₹5,00,000. Suggest a suitable mode for each with reasons.

    Hint

    RTGS has a minimum.

    Answer

₹50,000 can be sent by NEFT, which has no minimum and suits small and medium amounts, or IMPS if it is urgent, because RTGS needs at least ₹2 lakh. ₹5,00,000 can go by RTGS, which settles individually in real time and is final, so the supplier receives it quickly.

  3. Q3 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

List and explain four safe habits for a person withdrawing cash from an ATM.

    Hint

    PIN, keypad, strangers, receipt.

    Answer

Never share the PIN or OTP with anyone. Cover the keypad when entering the PIN. Check the card slot and keypad for suspicious devices and avoid taking help from strangers. Collect the card, cash and receipt before leaving and do not write the PIN on the card.

  4. Q4 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

    Distinguish between NEFT and RTGS.

    Hint

    Settlement, amount, finality.

    Answer

Settlement: NEFT is settled in batches at set intervals, while RTGS is settled individually and immediately. Amount: NEFT has no minimum, while RTGS is meant for large amounts, with a minimum of ₹2 lakh. Suitability: NEFT suits small and medium transfers; RTGS suits large and urgent ones. Finality: an RTGS transfer, once made, is final.

  5. Q5 · 4 marks · Case-basedHOTS / competency

Suppose a young adult says, "A credit card is free money because I can spend now and pay whenever I like." Evaluate the statement and give advice.

    Hint

    Credit is a loan.

    Answer

The statement is wrong. A credit card gives credit, which is a loan that must be repaid. If the bill is paid in full by the due date no interest is charged, but if it is not, high interest and late fees are added. The holder should spend within the ability to repay, pay the full amount on time and check statements regularly.
