Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Financial fraud is an intentional act of deceiving a person or organisation to obtain money, property or advantage unlawfully. The syllabus asks for a brief understanding of five types: credit card fraud (unauthorised use of card details), false accounting (falsifying records), insurance fraud (false or inflated claims), intellectual property fraud (dishonest use of another's creation) and internet or cyber fraud (cheating using computers and the internet).
Understand Types of Financial Fraud: Card, Accounts, Insurance, Intellectual Property and Cyber
1. Meaning
Financial fraud is any intentional deception to obtain money, property or a financial advantage unlawfully, or to cause loss to another. It is a crime punishable by law. The syllabus asks for only a brief understanding of five types.
2. Credit card fraud
Unauthorised use of a person's credit or debit card or its details. Methods: theft of the card; skimming (copying card data with a device on an ATM or machine); phishing calls or fake websites that obtain the card number, CVV and OTP; applying for a card in another person's name (identity theft); and card-not-present fraud in online shopping.
Prevention: never share PIN, CVV or OTP; use secure websites; enable SMS alerts; block a lost card at once; check statements.
3. False accounting
Deliberately falsifying, hiding, destroying or manipulating accounting records or financial statements to mislead others. Examples: showing fictitious sales to inflate profit; hiding liabilities or losses; recording fake expenses to divert money; altering bills; "window dressing" accounts to get a loan or attract investors; understating income to evade tax.
Effects: lenders, shareholders and the government are misled, investors lose money, tax is evaded, and the firm may collapse. Audits and strong internal controls help prevent it.
4. Insurance fraud
Deliberate deception to obtain an insurance benefit that is not due, or by sellers to cheat policyholders. Examples: faking an accident, theft or death; deliberately damaging insured property and claiming; inflating the loss; hiding a pre-existing illness (breach of utmost good faith); claiming the same loss from two insurers; fake agents selling non-existent policies and keeping premiums.
Effect: genuine policyholders pay higher premiums and trust in insurance falls.
5. Intellectual property fraud
Intellectual property means creations of the mind: inventions, brand names, designs, books, music, software. They are protected by patents, trademarks, copyrights and designs. Fraud is the dishonest copying, use or sale of another's creation without permission, for gain. Examples: counterfeit goods under another firm's trademark; pirated films, music or software; copying a patented invention; passing off another's design as one's own.
The owner can seek a court order to stop the use, claim damages and file a police complaint; registration makes protection stronger.
6. Internet and cyber fraud
Fraud committed using computers, the internet, email, phones or social media. Forms: phishing (fake emails, messages or websites, also by phone call or SMS) to steal passwords, card details or OTPs; identity theft; hacking; fake online shops and investment schemes; lottery, prize and job scams that ask for a fee first; malware and ransomware.
Prevention: strong secret passwords and two-step verification; do not click unknown links; check website addresses (https); keep software updated; verify before paying; report quickly to the bank and the police cyber cell.

Practice questions on Types of Financial Fraud: Card, Accounts, Insurance, Intellectual Property and Cyber
Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.
Q1 · 2 marks · Very short answerBoard level
Name two types of financial fraud.
Hint
Think card and cyber.
Answer
Credit card fraud and insurance fraud. (Any two of the five types.)
Q2 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level
Suppose a customer receives a phone call from someone claiming to be a bank officer, asking for the card number and OTP. Explain the fraud and what the customer should do.
Hint
Vishing.
Answer
This is a cyber fraud and an attempt at credit card fraud by phishing over the phone. The customer should not share the card number, CVV or OTP, because banks never ask for them. He should end the call, contact the bank through its official number, block the card if in doubt and report the call.
Q3 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level
Explain how insurance fraud affects honest policyholders and the insurer.
Hint
Premiums and trust.
Answer
False or inflated claims force the insurer to pay out more money than it should, so it earns less and has to raise premiums, which genuine policyholders then pay. The insurer also spends more on investigating claims, and trust in insurance falls.
Q4 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level
Describe intellectual property fraud and two actions the owner of the property can take.
Hint
Copying a creation.
Answer
It is the dishonest use, copying or sale of someone else's creation, such as a brand name, film, software or invention, without permission and for gain; for example, selling counterfeit goods under another firm's trademark. The owner can obtain a court order to stop the use and claim damages, and can file a police complaint; registering the patent, trademark or copyright strengthens protection.
Q5 · 4 marks · Case-basedHOTS / competency
Suppose a young person believes that online shopping frauds happen only to careless people. Evaluate the belief and suggest measures that every shopper should take.
