Advertising and Sales Promotion ICSE Class 10 Commercial Studies
Updated 14 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Advertising is a paid, non-personal message about a product, service or idea from an identified sponsor; sales promotion is a short-term incentive, such as a discount or free sample, that pushes immediate buying. ICSE Class 10 tests their meaning, merits and demerits, publicity, advertising agencies, social advertising and promotion techniques.
What Advertising and Sales Promotion is about
A firm that makes a good product still has to tell people about it and persuade them to buy. Advertising builds awareness and preference over time; sales promotion gives a quick push at the point of sale.
The 2027 syllabus covers: the meaning and importance of advertising, its merits and demerits, the difference between advertising and publicity, the meaning and functions of an advertising agency, social advertising media (concept and examples only), and the meaning and techniques of sales promotion with the difference between advertising and sales promotion. In the 2024 board paper this chapter gave a picture MCQ on social advertising, an MCQ on merchandising aids, a 5-mark question on the advertising agency and another on merits and demerits of advertising.
Weightage: CISCE publishes no chapter weightage. Section A (40 marks) is compulsory, with 1-mark MCQs and short 2-mark answers; in Section B you answer any four of six 10-mark questions.Source: CISCE ICSE Commercial Studies (631) specimen paper structure, 2025, retained for 2027 by the CISCE circular of 9 October 2026
Key concepts
- Meaning and importance of advertising
Advertising is any paid form of non-personal presentation and promotion of goods, services or ideas by an identified sponsor. Its key words are: paid (the advertiser pays for space or time), non-personal (one message reaches many people through a medium), identified sponsor (the advertiser's name is shown) and persuasion.
Importance to manufacturers and traders: introduces new products, increases sales and so lowers cost per unit, builds brand image and goodwill, meets competition.
Importance to consumers: gives information on products, prices, uses and new varieties; helps comparison and choice; saves shopping time.
Importance to society: creates demand and so employment; supports newspapers, television and websites with revenue; spreads social messages such as health and safety.Worked example
(2 marks) Define advertising and state its two key features.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Definition: paid, non-personal presentation and promotion of goods, services or ideas by an identified sponsor - 1 mark.
- Features: it is paid for; the sponsor is identified (also: non-personal, aims to persuade) - 1 mark.
Answer: Advertising is a paid, non-personal presentation and promotion of goods, services or ideas by an identified sponsor. Two features: the advertiser pays for it, and the sponsor's identity is disclosed.
- Merits and demerits of advertising
Merits: (1) Wide reach: one message reaches millions through television, newspapers or the internet. (2) Increases sales and allows large-scale production, lowering cost per unit. (3) Informs and educates consumers about new products and uses. (4) Builds brand image and goodwill. (5) Creates employment in media and advertising firms. (6) Supports the media by paying for it.
Demerits: (1) Adds to cost, which may be passed on to consumers as higher prices. (2) Can mislead through exaggerated or false claims. (3) Encourages people to buy things they do not need (artificial wants). (4) Some ads are in poor taste or hurt social values. (5) Big advertisers crowd out small firms, encouraging monopoly. (6) Too many ads cause confusion and waste.
Worked example
(2 marks) State one merit and one demerit of advertising.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Merit: increases sales, allowing large-scale production and lower cost per unit - 1 mark.
- Demerit: may mislead consumers with exaggerated claims - 1 mark.
Answer: Merit: it increases demand, so the firm produces on a large scale at a lower cost per unit. Demerit: it may mislead consumers through exaggerated or false claims.
- Advertising versus publicity
Publicity is unpaid, non-personal communication about a firm or product by the media, such as a news report or a review, that the firm does not pay for and does not control.
Differences: (1) Payment: advertising is paid; publicity is free. (2) Sponsor: advertising has an identified sponsor; publicity has none. (3) Control: the firm controls the content, timing and placement of an advertisement; it has no control over publicity, which may be favourable or unfavourable. (4) Credibility: publicity is usually believed more because it comes from an independent source. (5) Repetition: an advertisement can be repeated as often as the firm pays; publicity usually appears once. (6) Purpose: advertising always aims to promote sales; publicity aims to report news.
Worked example
(2 marks) Write any two differences between advertising and publicity.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Payment: advertising is paid for; publicity is free - 1 mark.
- Control: the advertiser controls the content; publicity is controlled by the media - 1 mark.
Answer: (1) Advertising is paid for by the sponsor, whereas publicity is free. (2) The advertiser controls the message, timing and medium of an advertisement, whereas the content of publicity is decided by the media and may even be unfavourable.
- Advertising agency: meaning and functions
An advertising agency is an independent business firm of specialists (copywriters, artists, media planners, researchers) that plans, prepares and places advertisements for its clients. It is paid by commission from the media or by fees from the client.
Functions: (1) Planning the advertising campaign: deciding the message, target audience, budget and schedule with the client. (2) Creating the advertisement: copywriting, artwork, layout, filming. (3) Selecting media and buying space or time: newspapers, television, radio, outdoor, internet. (4) Market research: studying consumers, the product and competitors before the campaign. (5) Evaluating results: checking whether the campaign increased awareness and sales. (6) Other services: package design, public relations, sales promotion schemes.
Worked example
(2 marks) What is an advertising agency?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- An independent firm of specialists - 1 mark.
- That plans, prepares and places advertisements on behalf of clients - 1 mark.
Answer: An advertising agency is an independent firm of specialists that plans, prepares and places advertisements for its clients, and is paid through commission or fees.
- Social advertising media
Social advertising is advertising that promotes a socially useful idea or cause, not a commercial product. It aims to change people's attitudes or behaviour for the good of society. It is usually issued by the government, public bodies or non-profit organisations, and sometimes by businesses as part of social responsibility.
Examples: messages on road safety ('wear a helmet'), anti-smoking and anti-drug campaigns, saving water and electricity, cleanliness, polio and other vaccination drives, blood and organ donation, education of the girl child, voting awareness, and warnings against cyber fraud.
Media used: posters and hoardings, television and radio announcements, newspaper ads, street plays, and increasingly social media platforms (posts, short videos, messages) that spread the idea quickly and cheaply to large numbers.
Worked example
(2 marks) What is social advertising? Give one example.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Advertising that promotes a social cause or idea rather than a commercial product - 1 mark.
- Example: a poster urging people to save water - 1 mark.
Answer: Social advertising is advertising that spreads a socially useful message to change people's behaviour, not to sell a product; for example, a poster urging two-wheeler riders to wear helmets.
- Sales promotion: meaning and techniques
Sales promotion means short-term incentives, other than advertising and personal selling, offered to consumers or dealers to encourage immediate purchase.
Consumer techniques: (1) free samples; (2) price-off or discount offers; (3) premium or gift offers (a free item with the product); (4) coupons entitling a price cut; (5) contests and lucky draws; (6) exchange offers (old for new); (7) 'buy one get one free' (quantity offers); (8) refund offers; (9) trading stamps given with purchases that can be exchanged for gifts; (10) fairs and exhibitions where products are displayed and demonstrated; (11) free service or warranty and instalment buying.
Dealer techniques: extra commission or bonus, credit facilities, and merchandising aids: help to dealers with store layout, window and shelf displays, product demonstrations, point-of-sale material and local advertising.
Worked example
(2 marks) What is sales promotion? Name two of its techniques.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Short-term incentives to encourage immediate purchase - 1 mark.
- Techniques: free samples, coupons (also discounts, contests, exchange offers) - 1 mark.
Answer: Sales promotion means short-term incentives offered to buyers or dealers to boost immediate sales; two techniques are free samples and discount coupons.
- Advertising versus sales promotion
(1) Purpose: advertising creates awareness and long-term preference; sales promotion gives an immediate push to sales. (2) Time: advertising is a continuous, long-term activity; sales promotion is short-term and occasional. (3) Approach: advertising pulls customers towards the product by persuasion; sales promotion pushes the product with incentives. (4) Media: advertising uses mass media; sales promotion works mainly at the point of sale, through dealers and offers. (5) Effect: advertising builds brand image; frequent promotions may cheapen the image.
Worked example
(2 marks) Write any two differences between advertising and sales promotion.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Time: advertising is long-term; sales promotion is short-term - 1 mark.
- Purpose: advertising builds awareness; sales promotion gives an immediate boost to sales through incentives - 1 mark.
Answer: (1) Advertising is a continuous, long-term activity, while sales promotion is used for short periods. (2) Advertising informs and persuades to create lasting demand, while sales promotion offers incentives such as discounts to make people buy immediately.
Advertising and Sales Promotion in real life
Each concept, met in an everyday situation. Read the situation, answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.
Publicity versus advertising
Suppose a new restaurant, Mehta's Kitchen, pays for a quarter-page newspaper ad on Monday, and on Friday a food critic writes a glowing review of it in the same paper without being paid.
Which is advertising and which is publicity? Which will readers trust more?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- The paid quarter-page with Mehta's Kitchen as sponsor is advertising.
- The unpaid critic's review is publicity; the restaurant did not control it.
- Readers trust publicity more because it comes from an independent source.
Answer: The paid ad is advertising; the unpaid review is publicity, and readers usually trust the review more because it is independent.
Memory hook: Paid and controlled = advert; free and uncontrolled = publicity.
Sales promotion techniques
Imagine you visit a mall and see: a stall offering free tasting cups of a new cereal, a sign saying 'Bring your old mixer, get ₹500 off a new one', and a shampoo bottle with a free comb taped to it.
Name the three sales promotion techniques.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Free tasting cups: free samples.
- Old mixer for ₹500 off: exchange offer.
- Free comb with shampoo: premium (gift) offer.
Answer: Free samples, an exchange offer and a premium (free gift) offer.
Memory hook: Taste it, swap it, get a gift with it.
Social advertising
Suppose your school's Interact Club puts up posters saying 'Every drop counts: turn off the tap' and shares a short video of the same message on social media.
What kind of advertising is this, and how is it different from a soft-drink advertisement?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- It promotes a socially useful idea (saving water), not a product.
- It aims to change behaviour, not to earn profit.
- A soft-drink ad aims to increase sales of a commercial product.
Answer: It is social advertising: it spreads a social message to change behaviour, while the soft-drink ad promotes a product for profit.
Memory hook: Social ads sell ideas, not goods.

Example 5: Advertising agency · 5 marks · Long answerHarder board level
What is an advertising agency? Describe any two of its functions.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Meaning: independent firm of specialists that plans, prepares and places ads for clients (1 mark).
- Function 1: planning the campaign: message, target audience, budget, schedule (2 marks).
- Function 2: media selection and buying: choosing newspapers, TV, internet and booking space or time at the best rates (2 marks).
Answer: An advertising agency is an independent firm of specialists (copywriters, artists, media planners) that plans, prepares and places advertisements for its clients for a commission or fee. (1) Planning the campaign: with the client it decides the message, target audience, budget and timing of the campaign. (2) Media selection and buying: it chooses the most suitable media, such as newspapers, television or websites, and books space or time at the best rates.
Example 6: Merits and demerits · 5 marks · Long answerHarder board level
Explain in brief two merits and three demerits of advertising.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Merit 1: informs consumers about products, prices and uses.
- Merit 2: raises demand, allowing large-scale production and lower cost per unit.
- Demerit 1: adds to cost and may raise prices.
- Demerit 2: may mislead through exaggeration.
- Demerit 3: creates artificial wants and wasteful spending.
Answer: Merits: (1) It informs consumers about new products, their prices and uses, helping them choose. (2) It increases demand, so the firm produces on a large scale at a lower cost per unit. Demerits: (1) Its cost is often added to the price paid by consumers. (2) Exaggerated or false claims may mislead buyers. (3) It tempts people to buy things they do not need, encouraging wasteful spending.
Example 7: Choosing the right tool · 5 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency
Suppose a biscuit company has 50,000 packets close to their 'best before' date and also wants to build its new brand over the next two years. Which promotion tool suits each aim? Justify.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Clearing stock fast needs an immediate push: sales promotion (price-off, buy-one-get-one, free samples).
- Building a brand over two years needs continuous awareness and image: advertising.
- Using promotions too often for the brand may cheapen its image.
- So combine: promotions for the old stock, advertising for the new brand.
Answer: For the near-expiry packets, sales promotion such as price-off or buy-one-get-one-free gives the quick boost needed to clear stock. For the new brand, advertising through television, newspapers and social media builds awareness and image over time. Advertising suits long-term goals and sales promotion short-term ones; relying only on discounts could cheapen the new brand.
Case-study practice (Section B style)

Where students lose marks in Advertising and Sales Promotion
The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Defining advertising when asked about an advertising agency
The 2024 examiners reported candidates defining advertising instead of the agency.
Do this: An agency is a firm: 'an independent firm of specialists that plans, prepares and places ads for clients'.
Usually costs: The meaning mark and often the functions too.
Mistake: Writing agency functions as merits of advertising
In 2024 Q9(ii) candidates wrote functions of an advertising agency when asked for merits and demerits of advertising.
Do this: Read the question twice; merits are benefits of advertising itself (sales, information, lower unit cost).
Usually costs: Up to 5 marks.
Mistake: Not recognising merchandising aids
The 2024 examiners found the MCQ on store layout and demonstrations confusing for candidates.
Do this: Merchandising aids = help given to dealers with displays, layout and demonstrations.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Calling a public-service poster 'sales promotion'
Students link every poster with selling.
Do this: If it promotes a social cause, it is social advertising (2024 picture MCQ).
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Wrong split in a 'two merits and three demerits' question
Students write five merits or mix them.
Do this: Label 'Merits' and 'Demerits' and give exactly the numbers asked.
Usually costs: 1 to 3 marks.

Advertising and Sales Promotion: frequently asked questions
Is social media advertising the same as social advertising?
Not exactly. Social advertising means ads for social causes. Social media is one of the channels such ads use, along with posters, television and radio. A firm can also advertise products on social media, which is not social advertising.
Is a free sample advertising or sales promotion?
Sales promotion: it is a short-term incentive at the point of contact, not a paid message in a medium.
Can publicity be bad for a firm?
Yes. Since the firm does not control it, a news report on a defective product is publicity too, and it can harm sales.
