Angles in a Circle and Cyclic Quadrilaterals: Class 9

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

The angle an arc makes at the centre is twice the angle it makes at any point of the remaining circle. From this: angles in the same segment are equal, the angle in a semicircle is $90^\circ$, and the opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral add up to $180^\circ$. Conversely, if a quadrilateral has opposite angles summing to $180^\circ$, its four vertices lie on one circle.

Notice that the angle at the centre (2x) is double the angle at P, and that P and Q on the same side of AB both see the chord at x.

Understand Angles in a Circle and Cyclic Quadrilaterals

Central angle theorem. For an arc and a point on the remaining part of the circle, . The proof joins and extends it: each of the triangles and is isosceles (two radii), and the exterior angle at of each equals the sum of the two equal base angles, so it is twice a base angle. Adding (or subtracting, depending on the figure) gives the result. For a major arc the angle at the centre is a reflex angle, and the theorem still holds with that reflex value.

Angles in the same segment. Any two points and on the same side of chord give , since each is half of . The converse is also true: if two points on the same side of see it at equal angles, the four points lie on one circle (they are concyclic).

Angle in a semicircle. When is a diameter, , so every point on the circle has . This gives two useful facts: the circumcentre of a right triangle is the midpoint of its hypotenuse, so the circumradius is half the hypotenuse; and a median to the hypotenuse equals half the hypotenuse.

Cyclic quadrilateral. A quadrilateral whose four vertices lie on a circle is cyclic. Its opposite angles are supplementary: . Reason: the arcs and subtend and at the circle and together make up the full at the centre, so the two inscribed angles add to half of . Equivalently, an exterior angle of a cyclic quadrilateral equals the interior opposite angle. The converse lets you prove that four given points are concyclic.

Which rectangles and parallelograms are cyclic? A rectangle is cyclic (all angles are , opposite pairs add to ). A parallelogram is cyclic only if it is a rectangle, because opposite angles of a parallelogram are equal, so equal and supplementary means each is . A cyclic trapezium must be isosceles.

Strategy for a long problem. Identify what arc each given angle stands on, label equal angles in the same segment, find a triangle or a cyclic quadrilateral, and use the angle sum or the supplementary rule. Write one reason per line; examiners award one mark per reason.

How to solve Angles in a Circle and Cyclic Quadrilaterals questions

Decide which of the four angle facts applies, then chain them with the triangle angle sum.

  1. 1Mark the centre if given, and note which arc each given angle stands on.
  2. 2For an angle at the centre and one on the circle on the same arc, use .
  3. 3Look for angles in the same segment (equal) and for a diameter (right angle).
  4. 4If four points of a quadrilateral are on the circle, use opposite angles summing to , or exterior angle = interior opposite angle.
  5. 5Fill in the remaining angles with the angle sum of a triangle () and the linear pair.
  6. 6Write a reason beside every line, and check the answer with a second route if one exists.

Angles in a Circle and Cyclic Quadrilaterals in real life

Each concept, met in an everyday situation. Read the situation, try the problem, then check the solution. The one-line hook is what to remember.

Angle in a semicircle

Suppose a semicircular stage has a straight front edge of 20 m, and a spotlight stands at a point on the curved edge.

What is the angle at the spotlight, and how far is the spotlight from the middle of the front edge?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. is the diameter of the semicircle and is on the curved part, so (angle in a semicircle).
  2. The middle of is the centre, and is a radius, so m.

Tricks to remember Angles in a Circle and Cyclic Quadrilaterals

Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.

  • Centre sees double

The centre sees an arc at twice the angle that the circle sees it. Half the central angle gives any inscribed angle.

Use it when: Finding an angle on the circle from the centre, or the reverse.

  • Opposite angles make a straight line

Opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral add to , the angle of a straight line.

Use it when: Cyclic quadrilateral numericals and proofs.

  • Same side, same angle

Two viewers on the same side of a chord see it at the same angle.

Use it when: Angles in the same segment.

Where students lose marks in Angles in a Circle and Cyclic Quadrilaterals

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Applying the central angle theorem to the wrong arc

Using the inscribed angle from the same side as the centre, on the minor arc.

    Wrong working

on the minor arc with , so .

    Right working

For on the minor arc, .

Do this: Ask: is on the major arc or the minor arc? The reflex angle belongs with the minor-arc point.

Usually costs: 1 to 2 marks.

  • Mistake: Pairing the wrong angles in a cyclic quadrilateral

    Adding adjacent angles to .

    Wrong working

    .

    Right working

    (opposite).

Do this: Label the quadrilateral in order and add angles that do not share a side.

    Usually costs: The whole result.

  • Mistake: No reason beside each step

Writing the angle without naming the theorem.

    Wrong working

    .

(angle at the centre is twice the angle on the circle).

Do this: Write the theorem in brackets on every line.

Usually costs: ½ mark per step.

Exam tips

  • Always say which arc the angles stand on before applying a theorem.
  • Spot diameters: a diameter gives a angle for free.
  • After finding an angle in a cyclic figure, test it against the opposite-angles rule as a check.
  • A converse proof needs both a supplementary pair and a conclusion that the points are concyclic.
