Vitamin-M (Kaveri Unit 4): Character Sketch of Grandpa, Ravi and Vidya

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

In Vitamin-M, Grandpa is independent, sharp and playful; Ravi is dutiful, caring and a little foolish in his detective role; and his mother Vidya is loving but over-protective and, in the end, forgetful herself. Each trait is shown through action: Grandpa's trick with the cap, Ravi's hiding, and Vidya's forgotten birthday.

Understand Vitamin-M: Character Sketch of Grandpa, Ravi and Vidya

How to write a character sketch. Name the character, give two or three traits, support each with an event or quotation, and end with what the character shows about the theme. A trait without evidence earns few marks.

Grandpa (retired lawyer, seventy-five). (1) Independent: he says he has been "looking after myself for the better part of my seventy-five years" and has kept house since his wife died ten years ago. (2) Sharp: he plays brilliant chess and remembers famous games, and he guesses Ravi's instructions. (3) Playful and clever: he gives his yellow cap to a man at the barber shop, so Ravi follows the wrong man, and he enjoys the sugary tea, bananas and ice cream forbidden at home. (4) Generous: he hands out gifts on his own birthday, as he always does, which the story calls "typical of Grandpa". (5) Proud: he resents being "treated like a baby".

Ravi (a schoolboy on holiday). (1) Dutiful: he promises his mother that he will not let Grandpa go out alone. (2) Considerate: he follows secretly, not wanting to hurt Grandpa's feelings. (3) Eager but inexperienced: his hiding behind an elephant-shaped bush and banyan tree is comic, and he enters the ladies' salon by mistake. (4) Affectionate: when he reaches home and finds Grandpa asleep, he hugs him and asks nothing.

Vidya (Ravi's mother). (1) Loving and anxious: she worries because Grandpa took a double dose of medicine and once got lost. (2) Over-protective: she speaks loudly to him, as if he were a child, and instructs Ravi never to let him out alone. (3) Ironically forgetful: she circled Grandpa's birthday on the calendar and still forgot it. Her love is real, but her way of showing it is condescending.

Relationships. Grandpa and Ravi share a warm bond, while Grandpa and Vidya have a loving but strained one, because of her worry.

What the characters show. Respect and independence are as important as care.
