Understand A Tale of Valour: The Battle of Badgam and Leadership
Order of events in the lesson.
1. 22 October 1947: the operation against the Kashmir Valley is launched.
2. 26 October: the state becomes part of India.
3. 27 October: Indian troops are sent, flown into Srinagar.
4. 31 October: D Company, 4 Kumaon, led by Major Somnath Sharma, is flown to Srinagar. His left hand is in plaster, yet he insists on going with his men.
5. 3 November: several companies patrol the area. By afternoon all but D Company have been called back.
6. The battle: the enemy attacks twice; Major Somnath guesses that the first is a distraction. About 90 men face about 500. He asks for air support, lays out ground panels for the planes, fills magazines for gunners and encourages his men.
7. His last message: he says that he will not withdraw an inch and will fight to the last man and the last round. A mortar shell kills him minutes later.
8. After the battle: his men fight on for more than six hours, reinforcements arrive and the enemy suffers heavy losses. Srinagar is saved, and the Param Vir Chakra is awarded to him after his death at the age of 24.
Why Badgam mattered. The village stood on higher ground, under 5 km from the airport. Whoever held it controlled the way to the airfield.

Leading from the front
Suppose the captain of a school relay team has a sprained wrist. The coach says he may sit out, yet he runs the final lap, passes the baton cleanly and encourages the others at every handover. His teammates run faster because they see him try.
Which quality of Major Somnath Sharma does the captain show, and what is the difference between the two situations?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- The captain continues despite an injury, as the Major did with his hand in plaster.
- He leads by example and so inspires his team.
- The difference: the relay is a game and the Major was fighting a battle; the lesson does not compare them.
Answer: He shows leadership by example and courage despite injury, which also describe the Major. The comparison is only about the quality; a relay carries no danger like a battle.
