Types of Maps by Scale and Function (Class 11 Practical Work in Geography, Chapter 1)
Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked
By scale, maps are large-scale (cadastral at 1:4,000 for villages; topographical at 1:250,000, 1:50,000, 1:25,000) or small-scale (wall and atlas maps). By function they are physical (relief, geological, climatic, soil) or cultural (political, population, economic, transportation). Maps are used to measure distance, direction and area.
As the scale gets smaller, from cadastral to atlas, the area covered grows and detail falls; physical maps show nature, cultural maps show human features.

Understand Types of Maps by Scale and Function: Cadastral, Topographical, Wall, Atlas, Physical and Cultural Maps
Why this topic matters. Classification of maps with scale values is a regular practical-paper question, and map type identification is tested in viva.
1. Large-scale and small-scale. Large-scale maps cover small areas in more detail; small-scale maps cover large areas in generalised form. Topographical maps at 1:250,000, 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 and village maps, city zonal plans and house plans at 1:4,000, 1:2,000 and 1:500 are large scale; atlas maps and wall maps are small scale.
2. Cadastral maps. From the French *cadastre*, a register of territorial property. They show the ownership of land: field boundaries and house plans. Governments prepare them to realise revenue and taxes and to record ownership. Scales are very large: village maps 1:4,000 and city plans 1:2,000 and larger.
3. Topographical maps. Fairly large scale, based on precise surveys and produced as map series by national agencies. In India the Survey of India prepares them at 1:250,000, 1:50,000 and 1:25,000, with uniform colours and symbols for relief, drainage, farmland, forest, settlements and communications.
4. Wall maps. Drawn on large paper or plastic for classrooms; scale smaller than topographical maps but larger than atlas maps.
5. Atlas maps. Very small scale and highly generalised; an atlas is a graphic encyclopaedia of location, relief, drainage, climate, vegetation, cities, population, industries, transport and tourism.
6. Physical maps. Show natural features. Relief maps show general topography; geological maps show structures and rock types; climatic maps show climatic regions and elements such as temperature and rainfall; soil maps show soil distribution and properties.
7. Cultural maps. Show human-made features. Political maps show administrative divisions; population maps show distribution, density, growth and composition and have the most significant role in planning; economic maps show crops, minerals, industries, markets and trade; transportation maps show roads, railways, stations and airports.
8. Uses. Maps help measure distance (dividers, thread, rotameter), direction (north as base; cardinal and intermediate directions) and area (the squares method, polar planimeter).

Answer: Topographical maps are fairly large-scale maps based on precise surveys, produced as series by national agencies; the Survey of India prepares them at 1:250,000, 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 with uniform colours and symbols.
Example 3: Wall versus atlas · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level
Distinguish between wall maps and atlas maps. (3 marks)
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Wall maps are on large paper or plastic for classrooms (1 mark).
- Atlas maps are in book form (graphic encyclopaedia) and very small scale (1 mark).
- Wall scale is smaller than topographical but larger than atlas; atlas is highly generalised (1 mark).
Answer: Wall maps are drawn on large sheets of paper or plastic for classroom use, at a scale smaller than topographical maps but larger than atlas maps. Atlas maps are very small-scale, highly generalised maps bound in a book that acts as a graphic encyclopaedia of location, relief, climate, population and more.
Example 4: Assertion and reason: population map · 1 mark · Assertion-reasonHarder board level
Assertion (A): Population maps play a most significant role in planning.
Reason (R): They show distribution, density, growth and composition of the population.
(A) Both true, R explains A
(B) Both true, R does not explain A
(C) A true, R false
(D) A false, R true
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution

Answer: (A)
Example 5: HOTS: choosing the map · 5 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency
For each need, name the best map type and justify: (i) a panchayat records ownership of fields, (ii) a trekker plans a route with contours and settlements, (iii) a teacher shows India's climatic regions on a classroom wall, (iv) a planner studies literacy and age-sex data. (5 marks)

- (iv) Population map, a cultural map (1 mark).
- Justification linking each choice to scale or content (1 mark).
Answer: (i) A cadastral map, because it shows field boundaries and ownership at a very large scale such as 1:4,000. (ii) A topographical map, which is fairly large scale, based on precise surveys and shows relief, drainage and settlements. (iii) A wall map of climatic regions, big enough for a class and suitable in scale. (iv) A population map, a cultural map that shows distribution, density and composition such as literacy and age-sex data.

Political maps are cultural maps.
Do this: Ask: natural or human-made?
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Quoting 1:4,000 for topographical maps
Scales mixed.
Wrong working
Topographical maps are at 1:4,000.
Right working

Area and detail.
Answer
A large-scale map shows a small area in more detail, for example a topographical map at 1:50,000 or a village cadastral map. A small-scale map shows a large area with generalised information, for example an atlas or wall map.
Q5 · 4 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency
Describe the information shown by relief, geological and climatic maps and say what user might need each. (4 marks)
