Continental Drift Theory: Wegener's Pangaea and the Evidence (Class 11 Geography, Fundamentals of Physical Geography, Chapter 4)

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Alfred Wegener proposed in 1912 that all continents formed one mass, Pangaea, which began to split about 200 million years ago into Laurasia and Gondwanaland. The evidence includes the jig-saw fit of coasts, rocks of the same age, tillite, placer gold in Ghana and fossils such as Mesosaurus. The weak point was the force he suggested.

Understand Continental Drift Theory: Wegener's Pangaea and the Evidence

Why this topic matters. A frequent Board question asks for evidence in support of continental drift.

1. Background. The symmetry of Atlantic coastlines suggested that the Americas, Europe and Africa were once joined. Abraham Ortelius (Dutch map maker) proposed this in 1596; Antonio Pellegrini drew a map with the continents together. Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist, put forward the comprehensive continental drift theory in 1912.

2. The idea. All continents formed one mass, Pangaea ("all earth"), surrounded by the mega-ocean Panthalassa. About 200 million years ago Pangaea began to split into Laurasia (north) and Gondwanaland (south), which later broke into today's continents.

3. Forces. Wegener proposed the pole-fleeing force (earth's rotation makes it bulge at the equator) and the tidal force (attraction of the moon and sun). Most scholars found these inadequate, the weak link of the theory.

4. Evidence.

  • Jig-saw fit. The facing shores of Africa and South America match. Bullard (1964) used a computer programme to match the Atlantic margins at the 1,000-fathom line; the fit was nearly perfect.
  • Rocks of the same age. A belt of ancient rocks (2,000 million years) on the Brazil coast matches rocks of western Africa. The earliest marine deposits on both coasts are Jurassic, so the ocean did not exist before.
  • Tillite. A sedimentary rock formed from glacial deposits. India's Gondwana system of sediments has counterparts in six southern landmasses; thick tillite at its base shows extensive, prolonged glaciation. It is evidence of palaeoclimates.
  • Placer deposits. Rich placer gold occurs on the Ghana coast but there is no source rock; the gold-bearing veins are in Brazil, so the gold came from the Brazil plateau when the continents were side by side.
  • Fossils. Identical species on either side of oceans. Lemurs in India, Madagascar and Africa led some to imagine "Lemuria". Mesosaurus, a small reptile of shallow brackish water, is found only in the Southern Cape province of South Africa and in Brazil, now 4,800 km apart.

5. After Wegener. After the Second World War, ocean floor discoveries added new dimensions. Arthur Holmes (1930s) proposed that radioactive elements cause thermal differences in the mantle that generate convection currents, an attempt to answer the problem of force.

Example 2: Wegener's forces · 3 marks · Short answerBoard level

Name two forces Wegener suggested and say why scholars rejected them. (3 marks)

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Pole-fleeing force from earth's rotation (1 mark).
  2. Tidal force of moon and sun (1 mark).
  3. They were considered totally inadequate to move continents (1 mark).

Answer: Wegener suggested a pole-fleeing force linked to the earth's rotation and a tidal force due to the moon and sun. Most scholars found these totally inadequate to move continents.

Example 3: Tillite as evidence · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Explain how tillite supports continental drift. (3 marks)

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Tillite is rock formed from glacial deposits (1 mark).
  2. India's Gondwana system, with thick tillite at its base, has counterparts in six different southern landmasses (1 mark).
  3. This shows these lands shared a glaciated history and were together (1 mark).

Answer: Tillite is a sedimentary rock formed from glacial deposits. India's Gondwana system, with thick tillite at its base, has counterparts in six different southern landmasses, showing extensive, prolonged glaciation. Similar histories imply that the lands were once together, so tillite is evidence of palaeoclimates and drift.

Example 4: Which statement is not supported? · 1 mark · MCQHarder board level

Which of the following is NOT cited as evidence for continental drift?
(A) Tillite deposits of the Gondwana system in several southern landmasses
(B) Placer gold on the Ghana coast whose source lies in Brazil
(C) Identical Mesosaurus fossils on two continents now 4,800 km apart
(D) Seasonal changes in the length of day

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. (A), (B) and (C) are evidence; (D) has nothing to do with the movement of continents (1 mark).

Answer: (D)

Example 5: HOTS: how convincing was drift in 1912? · 5 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency

"Wegener's theory was correct in its evidence but incomplete in its explanation." Evaluate. (5 marks)

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Evidence: fit, rocks of same age (1 mark).
  2. Evidence: tillite, placer gold, fossils (1 mark).
  3. Forces suggested were inadequate (1 mark).
  4. Holmes's convection currents tried to answer force (1 mark).
  5. Ocean floor studies after the Second World War completed the explanation (1 mark).

Answer: The coastal fit, rocks of the same age, tillite, Ghana's placer gold and Mesosaurus fossils all supported continents once being together. But the forces Wegener proposed, rotation and tides, were inadequate. Holmes proposed convection currents in the mantle, and after the Second World War ocean floor mapping gave new evidence which led to sea floor spreading and plate tectonics. So the evidence was strong but the mechanism was incomplete.

Practice questions on Continental Drift Theory: Wegener's Pangaea and the Evidence

Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.

  1. Q1 · 1 mark · MCQBoard level

Who proposed the convection current theory in the 1930s?
    (A) Wegener
    (B) Holmes
    (C) Hess
    (D) Bullard

    Hint

    Radioactive elements.

    Answer

    (B) Holmes.

  2. Q2 · 2 marks · Very short answerHarder board level

Mesosaurus fossils are found 4,800 km apart. If drift moved the continents at an average of 2.4 cm a year, estimate the years needed to cover 4,800 km (illustration). (2 marks)

    Hint

    Convert km to cm.

    Answer

4,800 km = 480,000,000 cm; 480,000,000 / 2.4 = 200,000,000 years, comparable to the 200 million years since Pangaea began to split (a rough illustration).

  3. Q3 · 2 marks · Very short answerBoard level

How did Bullard improve the "jig-saw fit" argument? (2 marks)

    Hint

    1,000-fathom line.

    Answer

He used a computer to fit the Atlantic margins at the 1,000-fathom line instead of the present shoreline, and the match was nearly perfect.

  4. Q4 · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Explain how rocks and marine deposits on the two sides of the Atlantic support drift. (3 marks)

    Hint

    Brazil and Africa.

    Answer

A belt of ancient rocks 2,000 million years old on the Brazil coast matches rocks in western Africa, and the earliest marine deposits on both coasts are Jurassic, so the ocean did not exist before that time and the continents were joined.

  5. Q5 · 4 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency

Wegener lacked a convincing force, yet later scientists accepted continental movement. Explain what changed. (4 marks)

    Hint

    Convection and ocean floor.

    Answer

Holmes's idea of convection currents in the mantle gave a possible force. After the Second World War ocean floor mapping showed ridges, trenches and young oceanic rocks, leading to sea floor spreading and plate tectonics, in which the lithosphere moves over a mobile mantle, replacing Wegener's weak forces.
