E-business and E-commerce Class 11: Meaning and the Scope of B2B, B2C, Intra-B and C2C

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

E-business is the conduct of industry, trade and commerce using computer networks; e-commerce is the narrower part that covers online dealings with buyers and sellers, so e-commerce is a subset of e-business. Its scope covers B2B (business to business), B2C (business to customer), intra-B (within the firm, also called B2E) and C2C (customer to customer).

Notice that e-commerce sits inside e-business as a subset, while Intra-B (within the firm) is e-business but not e-commerce.

Understand E-business, E-commerce and Their Scope: B2B, B2C, Intra-B and C2C (CBSE 11)

E-business. The conduct of industry, trade and commerce using computer networks (the internet, intranets and extranets). It covers all business functions: production, marketing, finance, human resources and relations with suppliers and customers.

E-commerce. The online dealings of a firm with its buyers and sellers: taking orders, buying and selling, and sending or receiving payments. Every e-commerce activity is e-business, but e-business also includes internal processes such as online inventory management, payroll and staff training. So e-commerce is a subset of e-business.

Scope of e-business.

  • B2B (business to business): both parties are businesses.
  • Procurement of inputs: ordering raw materials and components electronically; sharing production plans with suppliers so that parts arrive just in time and inventory is reduced.
  • Supply chain management: tracking orders, shipments and payments.
  • Distribution and dealer networks: dealers order and check stock online.
  • Payments: electronic fund transfer between firms.
  • Example: a car maker's system orders tyres automatically when stock falls below a set level.
  • B2C (business to customer): a business deals with consumers: online shopping, banking, ticket booking, food delivery, learning platforms. The firm can track preferences, give quick after-sales service and reach customers 24 x 7. Customer-to-business (C2B) flows such as feedback or bidding are also included.
  • Intra-B (business to employee, B2E): networks within the firm for communication among departments and employees: online attendance, leave and payroll, internal email, video meetings, e-learning, and coordination of production, sales and stores so that the firm can produce to order.
  • C2C (customer to customer): consumers deal directly with other consumers through an online platform such as an auction or classifieds site, to sell second-hand books, furniture, phones or cars. The platform provides the market space and sometimes a payment and safety mechanism.

Explain any four uses of B2B e-business with an example. (4 marks)

    Hint

    Procurement, supply chain, dealers, payments.

Procurement of inputs: ordering raw materials online, sharing plans so parts arrive just in time. Supply chain management: tracking orders, shipments and payments with suppliers and dealers. Distribution and dealer networks: dealers place orders and check stock online. Payments: electronic fund transfer between firms. Example: a car maker's system orders tyres when stock is low.

  4. Q4 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

A shop in a market pays rent of 80,000 and staff salaries of 40,000 a month. Online, the same business would pay 25,000 for the website and 30,000 for staff. Find the yearly saving in these costs and state two other differences between a traditional business and e-business. (4 marks)

    Hint

    Subtract monthly costs first.

    Answer

Monthly cost of the shop = 80,000 + 40,000 = 1,20,000. Online = 25,000 + 30,000 = 55,000. Monthly saving = 65,000; yearly saving = 65,000 x 12 = 7,80,000. Other differences: physical presence is required in traditional business but not in e-business; going global is easier in e-business; personal touch is higher in traditional business.

  5. Q5 · 5 marks · Case-basedHOTS / competency

Case: Rina, who lives in a small town, weaves handloom saris. She lists them on a shopping website, takes orders from customers across the country and also sells some used looms to another weaver on a classifieds site. (ii) State two limitations of e-business shown in the case. (2)
(iii) Which scope helps her track customer preferences? (1)

    Answer

    (i) B2C for saris sold to customers and C2C for the loom sold to another weaver. (ii) Low personal touch because the fabric cannot be felt, and incongruence between order-taking speed and order-fulfilment speed because deliveries are slow. (iii) B2C, where the firm can track customers' preferences.
