Ferrous Minerals and Iron Ore Mines Class 10: Belts and Map
Updated 14 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Ferrous minerals make up about three-fourths of the value of India's metallic mineral production. Iron ore, the backbone of industrial development, occurs as magnetite (up to 70 per cent iron) and hematite (50-60 per cent). India's four iron ore belts are Odisha-Jharkhand, Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur, Ballari-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru and Maharashtra-Goa. Manganese is used mainly in steel-making.
Magnetite is the richest, finest iron ore (up to 70% iron, magnetic), while hematite has 50–60% iron but is the most used in industry.

Understand Ferrous Minerals and Iron Ore Mines
What ferrous minerals are and why they matter. Ferrous minerals (those containing iron) account for about three-fourths of the total value of the production of metallic minerals. They give a strong base to metallurgical industries, and India exports substantial quantities after meeting its own needs.
Iron ore: the backbone of industry. Iron ore is the basic mineral and the backbone of industrial development. India has fairly abundant, good-quality reserves.
- Magnetite: the finest iron ore, with iron content up to 70 per cent and excellent magnetic qualities, especially valuable in the electrical industry.
- Hematite: the most important industrial iron ore by quantity used, with slightly lower iron content (50-60 per cent).
- In 2018-19, almost the entire production (97 per cent) came from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Jharkhand.
The four major iron ore belts.
1. Odisha-Jharkhand belt: high-grade hematite at the Badampahar mines in Mayurbhanj and Kendujhar districts of Odisha; in the adjoining Singbhum district of Jharkhand, hematite is mined at Gua and Noamundi.
2. Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur belt (Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra): very high-grade hematite in the Bailadila range of hills in Bastar district, Chhattisgarh. The range has 14 deposits of super high-grade hematite with the best physical properties for steel-making. Ore is exported to Japan and South Korea via Visakhapatnam port. (Bailadila hills look like the hump of an ox, hence the name.)
3. Ballari-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru belt (Karnataka): large reserves. The Kudremukh mines in the Western Ghats are a 100 per cent export unit and one of the largest deposits in the world; ore is sent as slurry through a pipeline to a port near Mangaluru. ('Kudre' means horse in Kannada; the highest peak there looks like a horse's face.)
4. Maharashtra-Goa belt: Goa and Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. Ores are not of very high quality but are efficiently exploited; exported through Marmagao port.
Manganese. Used mainly in making steel and ferro-manganese alloy: nearly 10 kg of manganese per tonne of steel. Also used in bleaching powder, insecticides and paints.
What makes a deposit a mine. NCERT notes that ore concentration, ease of extraction and closeness to the market decide whether a reserve is economically viable; only then does a 'deposit' or 'reserve' become a mine. Peninsular rocks hold most of India's coal, metallic minerals and mica, which is why the iron ore belts lie in the peninsula.
Map work (2026-27): identify these iron ore mines. Mayurbhanj (Odisha), Durg (Chhattisgarh), Bailadila (Bastar, Chhattisgarh), Bellary/Ballari (Karnataka) and Kudremukh (Western Ghats, Karnataka). NCERT's activity asks you to superimpose maps of iron ore, manganese, coal and the iron and steel industry to see how they are related.

How to answer Ferrous Minerals and Iron Ore Mines questions
This topic gives MCQs and assertion-reason items (ore types, belts, ports), 2-mark distinctions, 5-mark 'describe the iron ore belts' answers, case passages and map identification.
- 1For ore types, compare iron content, quality and use: magnetite up to 70 per cent, hematite 50-60 per cent.
- 2For belts, write belt name, state(s), a named mine and one special fact (export, port, quality).
- 3Link export ores to ports: Bailadila-Visakhapatnam, Kudremukh-Mangaluru, Goa-Marmagao.
- 4For manganese, give its main use with the 10 kg per tonne figure and two other uses.
- 5For map questions, place each mine in its state and relief: Kudremukh in the Western Ghats, Bailadila in Bastar.
Ferrous Minerals and Iron Ore Mines in real life
The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.
Why ore location and transport matter
Suppose a steel company has to choose between two iron ore deposits: one rich but deep in hills far from any port, the other slightly poorer but close to a port and a railway.
Using NCERT, explain what decides whether a deposit becomes a mine, with an Indian example of a mine that solved its transport problem.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Recall: concentration of mineral, ease of extraction and closeness to market decide economic viability.
- Weigh the two deposits on these factors.
- Give the example: Kudremukh ore, in the Western Ghats, is sent as slurry through a pipeline to a port near Mangaluru.
Answer: A deposit becomes a mine only if it is economically viable: the concentration of mineral, ease of extraction and closeness to the market all matter. A richer ore far from markets may cost more to move. Kudremukh shows how transport can be solved: its ore, in the Western Ghats, is pumped as slurry through a pipeline to a port near Mangaluru, making it a 100 per cent export unit.
Memory hook: Rich ore is worth only what it costs to move.
