Major Sea Ports of India Class 10: Map Pointing Guide
Updated 18 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Ten major sea ports are listed for the 2026-27 map: Kandla, Mumbai, Marmagao, New Mangalore and Kochi on the west coast (north to south), and Tuticorin, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia on the east coast (south to north). The 12 major ports handle 95 per cent of India's foreign trade by volume.
Understand Major Sea Ports of India for Map Work
Why ports matter. India has a vast coastline of 7,516.6 km, 12 major ports and about 200 notified non-major ports. The major ports handle 95 per cent of the country's foreign trade by volume; by value the share is 68 per cent. Waterways are the cheapest means of transport and suit heavy, bulky goods like iron ore and crude oil. The land behind a port that sends and receives goods through it is its hinterland.
West coast, north to south (5 listed).
- Kandla (Deendayal Port), Kuchchh, Gujarat: the first port developed after Independence. Karachi went to Pakistan at Partition, and Kandla eased the load on Mumbai.
- Mumbai, Maharashtra: the biggest port, with a spacious, natural, well-sheltered harbour.
- Marmagao (Mormugao), Goa: the premier iron ore exporting port, handling about half of India's iron ore exports.
- New Mangalore, Karnataka: exports iron ore concentrates from the Kudremukh mines.
- Kochi (Cochin), Kerala: the extreme south-western port, at the entrance of a lagoon with a natural harbour.
East coast, south to north (5 listed).
- Tuticorin (V.O. Chidambaranar), Tamil Nadu: the extreme south-eastern port with a natural harbour and a rich hinterland; trades with Sri Lanka and Maldives and with India's coastal regions.
- Chennai, Tamil Nadu: one of the oldest artificial ports, next to Mumbai in trade volume.
- Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh: the deepest landlocked, well-protected port, first planned for iron ore exports.
- Paradip, Odisha: specialises in iron ore exports.
- Haldia, West Bengal: a subsidiary port built to relieve pressure on Kolkata, an inland riverine port on the Hooghly.
Map technique. Use the port symbol on the coast, never inland. Label with the name or the first letters as the paper instructs. Kolkata is a port in the text but the listed map port near it is Haldia. Mumbai and Chennai appear again in the airport list, so use the right symbol.

Why bulky cargo uses ports
Suppose a factory in a coastal state must send 50,000 tonnes of a heavy mineral to another country. A trader compares trucks, trains and ships.
Why would the trader choose a ship from a port, and what is the port's hinterland?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Waterways are the cheapest means of transport.
- Heavy bulky goods suit ships.
- The hinterland is the area behind the port that supplies and receives goods through it.
Answer: Waterways are cheapest and suit heavy, bulky goods, so the trader would ship the mineral through a port. The hinterland is the land area behind the port whose trade passes through it.
Memory hook: Heavy goods go by sea.
